Hey people! Thanks to the makers of this website for creating a platform that enables people to communicate and share meaningful information. I want people to write down their views on why they are opting for HR. Not for my personal information, but to understand different perspectives and horizons in HR. Let's share it.

Why do people choose HR?

Dear Vivek,

People choose HR because it deals directly with the employees. HR stands for Human Resources, and the various activities related to it are:

1) Recruitment & Selection
2) Training & Development
3) Performance Appraisal
4) Industrial Relations
5) Administration
6) Formulation of Policies
7) Hiring & Firing
8) Manpower Planning
9) Payroll & Attendance
10) Organization Development

There are more activities, but these are some core activities that I have listed out.

HR not only entails handling Recruitment, Training, PMS, etc., but it also involves dealing with IR (Industrial Relations), which many fresh MBAs are hesitant to enter.

One can say that HR is the soul of an organization since it formulates policies, brings the best individuals into the company, and motivates them to perform.

Hey Ankit, thanks for your brief answer! Thanks for sharing the PPT and PDF. It's of great help. You described the basic functions of HR, but I asked why people opt for HR, the reason behind opting for HR. I am working in Zee News HR Dept as a project trainee and have learned a lot here. I want to start an exhaustive research on HR. Thanks for the help. Reply awaited.

Greetings,

Dear Vivek,

Why a person chooses a career path is always different from one person to another.

For instance, I asked one of my friends (a Finance Manager) why he chose Finance as a career. He explained that he discovered his proficiency in calculations and accounting while handling family purchases during his school days. Consequently, he pursued a B.Com followed by an MBA in Finance. Currently, he holds the position of Finance Manager in Dubai.

As for me, why do I like HR?

I began my career with a part-time role as a junior payroll accountant during my graduation. It was there that I realized my aptitude for managing employees, ensuring they comprehend policies and procedures, and effectively communicating with people. On some occasions where my seniors struggled to convey information to employees, I excelled. One of my seniors even suggested that I would make a good HR professional. Subsequently, I pursued studies in HR, solidifying my career path in the field.

I share these stories to emphasize that the choice of a career depends on one's interests, expertise, and the guidance received. For a successful Finance Manager, Finance is the ideal field, and similarly, for a successful HR professional, there is no field as fitting as HR.

However, to add on:

Being a people person by nature, I think a job related to handling people and emotions can be executed well by me, compared with analyzing numbers. Oh, I hate that... But sometimes unknowingly do a good job with numbers too when it's connected with hiring people.. ;-)

I chose HR as a profession because it satisfied me as a professional. I love dealing with people, sourcing the best talent, interviewing, conducting performance appraisals, etc.

HR is a vast field, but I enjoy every aspect of it. That's why I am in HR.

Hi Vivek,

This is a very good and much-needed research you are doing! First of all, thank you for this. And as for why HR? According to me, the people at the higher management level enter into HR after vast experience in managing people. Years of dealing with people across all fronts make them handle HR functions.

As for others, I know people who get into HR by omission, or people with no inclination towards finance. Mind you, I am not saying everyone does that, as I respect others' choices too! I am an HR professional myself. I entered into the HR line because at the time of decision-making, I had thought it was a very dignified and respectful job!!

Cheers to all HR professionals (everyone who is HR by choice or no choice... ;) )!

All dear friends,

All of you have given really nice and justifiable replies. Most of the points are covered in it even what I wanted to say. Thanks for the links too.

I am like Ms. Asha, just worst with numbers but I enjoy a lot when dealing with a variety of people, their problems, their talents, their aspirations, the way they mold themselves educationally, experience-wise, surrounding-wise, and wisdom-wise. There is so much to learn. Also, there is much to learn and develop in oneself through all the HR activities Ankit listed in brief. What Rashid said is absolutely right.

I opted for HR because I think I am excellent at communication, very good at counseling, a good coordinator, and at times a leader too. I love to lead, I love to share and solve people's problems, and I also enjoy activities like hiring the best talent, retaining them, networking, getting to know more and more people, and much more in HR.

Sometimes, it's definitely a thankless job, but then, as Anuja said, it's by choice! Why focus on the negatives of a field?

Congratulations on the topic you have selected for research. All the best! Do share more views with all of us.

Hello,

I am not involved in the HR Department, but as an employee, HR plays a crucial role in any company because without HR, a company cannot run successfully. One more thing to note is that employees interact directly with HR personnel rather than higher-ups who are secluded in their cabins. HR is the only department that can effectively communicate and consider the benefits of both employees and the company.

Hi Vivek, a nice question "why HR" you have posed.

I have 38 years of experience in dealing with people of all types, of all ages, and of different qualifications. In this process, I have identified hidden talents of many of my young colleagues, whom I decided to bring up in their career (a benefit my superiors never gave me for more than 30 years in my career!). They have come up and become more committed to the organization and thank me for my help. Having tasted this success and aware of my own strengths such as good interpersonal relationships with many, patience, ability to deal with people at all levels with poise, etc., I decided to take up HR as a profession so that I can benefit many more, especially the younger generation. Also, by this method, I feel I can give back to society something in return for many good things I have gained from many people over the years.

Put any MBAs from IIMs on "Sach ka Samna". The true answer would be : "I could not get into other specializations like Fin, Marketing, OR, Systems ... etc. " :-D

Hi Vivek,

I chose HR because it suits my nature. I am a girl who loves to interact with people. I spend my time interacting with my friends, relatives, or new people. I believe I can understand the feelings of others as I always put myself in their place and judge them accordingly.

In an organization, HR is the one who handles employees and helps them solve their problems. I think I can do that work in a better way. Therefore, to enhance my knowledge and learn the technical methods to handle people, I opted for HR as my specialization.

Hi Vivek,

First of all, to be honest, I chose HR as my specialization during my MBA days because I found it the easiest to learn and write exams. However, once I started working in the field professionally, I realized it was a challenging role. You have people from every stream, designation, and level working with you. Dealing with them requires understanding their nature. It is essential to comprehend their mindsets and behaviors. Having an interest in psychology can add significant value as it helps in managing all types of individuals within the organization.

I am genuinely happy to be working in HR and aspire to progress further in this field.

Andrina.

Dear Vivek,

Often, people mistake HR as just a supporting department. But just think once. We, the HR people, are supposed to find, evaluate, assign, train, and develop the most valuable asset of any organization, i.e., human resources. Any business can be conceptualized, developed, and run through human brains, not mere technology, machinery, or systems. Right from inception to the extreme, HR people have a vital and inevitable role to play. Hope you understood why HR.

Happy working,
