Hi all,

I have a query to ask all the members: If anyone joins an organization on a contract basis and not on the payrolls of the company in HR, what would be the impact on his growth prospects in the future? I am talking about an entry-level position in HR.

Regards,
Meha

Meha, are you talking about from the contractor’s perspective – What are my growth prospects now that I have taken on a contract position?
Or are you asking from the employer’s perspective – What are my obligations as an employer to grow my contractors?

Hi Vicki,

Thanks for the reply. I am speaking from an employee's perspective if he/she joins an organization on a contract basis and not on the company's payrolls.

1) Would it affect his/her growth prospects in the future?

2) After working on a contract basis for a year, would he/she face any problems in getting another job with a good profile in HR?

Looking forward to your reply.

Regards,
Meha

Hi,

I can't think of any way this hinders employees' growth prospects because, irrespective of whether you are on the payroll of an organization or on contract, the job profile would be the same and will provide you with the same kind of learning experience. So, forget about the status and start learning and absorbing as much as you can.

Best of luck!

Hi Meha,

Gone are the days when employers used to not consider candidates who have been working on a contract basis and applying for new jobs. Today, obtaining employment and developing your skills in your assignments can set you apart for the next level of assignment or job. Many big companies today, including MNCs, primarily hire junior staff up to executive level on a contract basis. There have been cases where these employees have advanced significantly and now hold managerial positions in their current organizations.

It is an outdated belief that working on a contract basis will not lead to future opportunities. If you develop your skills and fully engage in the function you are currently working in, I don't think this factor should hinder you from pursuing your next job. I hope this clears any misconceptions or doubts you may have.

Please let me know if you need further clarification.
