Hello all, today I faced a different situation: last week, I was on a factory round and saw a security guard chewing tobacco at the main gate. Consequently, I terminated that guard immediately and informed his field officer to replace him. However, the field officer did not take the issue seriously. Today, I called him again, and he mentioned that the owner of the Security Agency would come. I expressed my frustration, asking if the owner would handle the situation. This led to both of us getting angry, and he showed up with the so-called owner, who spoke loudly with me in the office. Dealing with these individuals wasted my time, and I am quite irritated. I would appreciate your suggestions on how to proceed. Please guide me on what I should do now. Kindly reply. Thank you.

First thing, cool down.

The guard comes from a culture and surroundings where chewing of tobacco is common. Take an advisory role and insist that tobacco chewing is injurious to health and pollutes the area by spitting and throwing plastic covers, etc. Talk to the owner and tell him that factory rules do not permit smoking/chewing tobacco, etc., and guards should be sensitized to this requirement. The first time you see such a thing, there is no need to terminate.

Chewing tobacco, spitting, and smoking are common problems in India. We need to adopt a counseling approach and have bold posters at appropriate places. Vendors should be sensitized about these policies in the factory area during the selection process itself. During supervisory rounds and meetings, this point should be noted and discussed. Only after serious efforts have been made should defaulters be punished.
