Good morning,
Can you please give some advice? I have an employee who is in the last month of probation. She tore her ligaments and was booked off by the doctor. The sick note stated she could return to work on July 6, which was last Thursday. I have not heard from her at all. I have no way of contacting her as both her and her husband's phones were stolen the previous week. She is still not in the office, and I don't know what to do.
Can you please assist?
Thanks,
Desire

Dear Desire, while recruiting the employee, you must have taken the CV from the employee. Has the home address been mentioned on the CV? If yes, then send the notice to her address.
Secondly, do you have a sick note at hand? If yes, is it issued by the hospital? If yes, then has the telephone number been mentioned on the sick note? Call them and find out whether she is still receiving treatment or if her treatment was stopped long ago.
The incident shows that the employee may not be that serious towards her job. You may be tempted to remove her. However, before her removal, follow the proper legal procedure as prevalent in your country.

Hi Dinesh,
I have her home address. What notice must I send? Intent to dismiss, abscondent, you have to return to work notice, or warning notice? I have a doctor's note, but no number or address is on there. Just the doctor's MP number and doctor's signature. I'm also thinking that she is not really wanting to work anymore, but that is just my opinion.

You may send her a notice regarding her absence and also address the issue of non-communication. Even for medical reasons, she needs to obtain prior approval for her absence. In this age of the internet, email, and mobile phones, there is no excuse for her to be uncommunicative. In the letter, clearly state that if she fails to report for duty or does not respond to the letter, severe disciplinary action will be taken against her. If you have her email address, please send the notice via email as well.
