Dear HR professionals,

I have completed a diploma in HR and a Masters in Human Resource Management from a reputed university in June 2013. I am a career-oriented person. Due to the recession in the market, I did not secure a job in any company. Currently, I have obtained a position at another university as an executive counselor in the admin department, and it has been about 15 days since I started this job.

My query is regarding my mismatched job role - my area of interest is core HR, yet I am working as an executive counselor in a university. If I decide to leave this job after a year, will it be possible for me to secure a position in a respected organization? Will my current experience be considered valuable? Have I taken a risk with my career by accepting this role?

Thank you.

Hi,

This experience will be considered in the same field, so I hope you will continue in the domain and field you are interested in. It's important to stay in the same field because relevant experience matters. For example, if you decide to join an IT company after this experience, you may be considered a fresher in the IT industry. This is because working as a counselor in a university is a different profile from working as an HR Executive in an IT company.

Thank you.

Hi,

First, join a small manufacturing industry to gain overall knowledge about each aspect of HR. Then, you can transition to a better or larger organization. If you aim to pursue a career in core HR, I believe working as a counselor in an education institute is not beneficial.

Hi Monali,

Your work experience as a counselor does not add to your experience for an HR Executive. However, the responsibilities can help you explore the working conditions and, most importantly, your communication skills. Communication skill is very important for an HR role, and you can add that to your resume.

Now, HR qualification + Communication Skills can help you apply for positions such as Employee Engagement Executive, the Negotiation Department, or Administration. We provide HR Functionality Training and Workshops where you can gain exposure to HR Key Roles and Execution. Please call 8605610361 for more information.

Thanks,

Since you have secured employment as a counselor, that's great. On the other hand, consider pursuing a job in any factory, whether big or small, but ensure you have the perseverance to transition into the HR field. Also, reflect on which area of HR interests you the most. Good luck.
