Dear Seniors,

I am doing my internship in a manufacturing firm that has around 300 blue-collar employees. I need to design a training module on "Leadership" to impart training to some identified employees who will be transitioning into a supervisory role. Any help and pointers would be wholeheartedly acknowledged and appreciated.

But those posts may not make you any wiser unless you are prepared to spend some money.

You can use games, storytelling, and other activities to debrief. Many resources are available on the site. However, leadership is more about values than training. It requires role modeling; we need to exhibit our leadership throughout the training. So, think, internalize, practice, and decide.

Hi Ashima,

Please remember one thing. Normally, when we train participants on leadership, we tend to quote very prominent worldwide leaders in politics, armed forces, industry, and so on.

However, please share with the participants that leadership occurs at the grassroots level or at the shop floor level. You should impress upon them that each of those leaders mentioned above had certain qualities. The participants should be able to identify these qualities and develop them over time - such as taking initiative, taking risks, showing empathy, rather than just showing how to do a job by doing it themselves and demonstrating to team members, taking suggestions from everybody before deciding, solving problems by sharing them with other team members, and walking the talk, among others.

There are excellent videos on leadership skills and team building on YouTube that should help them better understand the topic.

Additionally, incorporate a couple of games to illustrate the meaning of leadership.

I will provide some leads on this. You should differentiate between a Supervisory Manager and a Supervisory Leader. The former 'manages' the shift resources to the satisfaction of his/her superiors. Any lack of any resources - material or manpower - will be brought to the superiors for remedy. The latter functions on the credo of 'know your job and know your men'. Therefore, a leader will use his motivating skills as a force multiplier to bridge the lack of resources to get the optimum output.

Yesterday, I watched the IPL match between RCB and CSK. Till the last over, RCB had the upper hand. But the end result was a win for CSK. The RCB Captain - a good performer - was let down by his nerves shown by his fumbling in fielding. The CSK batters were motivated by their 'leader' and they won!
