Hi Sheel,

I too have a project on the same topic, and I have focused on the B.P.O Industry. I will forward you the data as I complete it. If you have some data, please forward it to me. When do you have to submit the project, or have you already completed it?

Regards,
Raksha

Hi Sheel,

I have completed a project on competency mapping in a software firm. To proceed, here is what I did:

- I looked at what the organization expected from my project. (It really helps to know this...)
- Selected roles/positions for which to carry out the competency mapping
- Read thoroughly the job descriptions of these roles
- Identified 4-5 top performers in each role (used the last 2-3 performance appraisal data)
- Sat with them and prepared a list of competencies they think are relevant to their job performance
- Sat with their supervisors/managers and identified what competencies are required
- Preparing a list of competencies before the above interviews came in handy

I have some data with me that I will be pleased to send if you need it.

Hi Bala,

Thank you for sharing the document, Amit. A general overview of competency mapping is available on the TV Rao Learning Systems website. A small excerpt is provided below:

"ART AND SCIENCE OF COMPETENCY MAPPING
A lot is happening currently regarding competency mapping. Significant resources are being allocated, and consultants are being engaged for this purpose. The escalating costs of manpower, the necessity of having competent individuals in key positions, and the drive to maintain competitiveness while recognizing the strategic benefits of a proficient workforce have led companies to adopt a more competency-focused approach."

You can find more information on the site [tvrls.com]. This might be useful for Sheel.

Thanks,
Bala

Dear Raksha,

I am Shyamalee, a final-year undergraduate student at the state university majoring in Human Resource Management. Currently, I am conducting research on the "Contribution of competency-based HR practices on employee motivation." Please assist me in designing the research and a questionnaire to address this topic. Specifically, I am examining employee attitudes towards whether it is acceptable to apply only competency-based approaches for certain HR functions or a combination of competency-based and performance-based approaches for functions like promotion and rewards. The questionnaire should also explore potential HR functions that can benefit from a competency mapping approach. If possible, could you share the results of your project?

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Thank you.

Competency Mapping (CM) need not be used for performance management alone. When skill-based incentives are on offer, this is viable. For other purposes, CM can be used for understanding the business preparedness of the individual/team/unit/project/group/branch/organization. It can also be used to identify gaps between actual and expected competency. Thus, it can act as an input for training. Competency mapping can also help in role profiling, thereby aiding in the career planning of the employee. These are but a few thoughts; there's a vast ocean out there...

Hello Amit,

Good job! I need to know in detail about the competency-driven career management theory applied in any organization. If you have any documents related to that, please enrich me with the same.
