I think you are using MS Office 2007 and this sheet is created in a lower version. When you open this sheet, Excel will show a warning message. Click "Yes," and the sheet will open. Then, save it again in the higher version, i.e., 2007.

I cannot open the workbook properly. All I am getting is a number of characters but not a proper worksheet . I am using Office 2003. What version is this xls using?

No doubt, it has a good effect. Why don't you add wage/salary calculation in another sheet? Please update and attach, as it would be more useful to all. You can also include the total number of days along with leave, which are referred to as payable days in the month.
