Dear,

As per my understanding, ex gratia is any amount paid by management to its employees apart from "Bonus."

For example, if the management decides to pay Rs. 1000 in addition to Rs. 3500, then Rs. 1000 is considered ex gratia.

As per my knowledge, the word "ex gratia" means "purva anugrah rashi," an amount that is paid by an employer at their full discretion, such as for good conduct or as a reward for good performance.

The amount which is paid as a good will amount, though there is no liability to pay. In other words, ex-gratia is a favour, and not compelled by legal right. Thanks, regards R K Nair

This is a legal term which means the payment given as a reward. As far as a bonus is concerned, the payments made by the employer on a percentage basis are called bonuses. Any payments made in excess of that are considered ex-gratia payments, as the employee should not claim the amount as a matter of right, even in the future. This may be referred to as BAKSHISI.
