Hi Ankita,

Even I had done my summer project with B.P.C.L. on the topic of employee satisfaction survey. I had to interview and get the questionnaire filled by the clerical and the labor staff at the corporate office, as well as had to visit various B.P.C.L. locations. I'm forwarding you the questionnaire I had prepared; you can get some help from that.

All the best! Take care.

Hi Sonali,

Thank you very much for the questionnaire. I am conducting this survey for NTPC. I am a bit confused about designing a questionnaire as I had thought of dividing the questions into various subheads. What do you recommend - subheads or the way you had structured your questionnaire?

Thanks & Regards,

Hi,

I am very thankful to you for uploading the questionnaire, but I wanted to know whether it is a standardized questionnaire. If so, could you please provide the details?

Thanks and looking forward to your reply.

Sajil.

Hi Ankita,

Have a word with your guide and get his feedback on this questionnaire. Find out what aspects he/she wants you to focus on in this survey. Find out by talking to other employees, just casually, about what they think is not good about this company or what is good. You'll then get an idea of how you can prepare your questionnaire. If you are taking a sample size for the survey, then include open-ended questions in your questionnaire. Have face-to-face talks with the employees, and you'll be in a better position to understand what satisfies them, what their complaints are, and what their recommendations are to improve the working conditions. If you need any other help, let me know. All the best!

Hi Sajil,

No, it's not a standardized questionnaire. During my summer training, I had a word with my guide, and he wanted me to get employee feedback on certain aspects such as training, performance appraisal, VRS scheme of the company, etc. So accordingly, keeping those aspects in mind, I had prepared the questionnaire. I read various books and used other sources as well to understand how to prepare the questionnaire. It took me around a week to prepare the questionnaire itself.

What details did you want to know? Let me know!!!!

Take care.

Hi Sonali,

I did talk to my mentor, and he said it would be more appropriate to make the questionnaire into various subheads. I do have a list of variables but still confused in drafting a questionnaire. There is hardly any interaction with the employees as it's a government company; nobody has time. The sample size would be around 90 to 100.

Can you suggest some questions regarding work-life balance?

Take care.

Hi Sonali,

I must, from the bottom of my heart, appreciate your hard work. It sure reflects in the questionnaire. The reason I asked you was just out of curiosity. Anyways, keep up the good work.

Regards,
Sajil.

Hi Ankita,

Even mine was a government organization, but what I did was I told my guide to give me some references of some employees whom I can talk to. I also approached some employees from my department as well, and spoke to them, telling them I was a trainee and required their cooperation. From them, I also got some references in other departments as they had friends in other departments too.

You just need to approach people, talk to them, tell them you have taken this project in hand. Start from the department you are in. I'm sure they will cooperate and help you.

I'll post some questions on work-life balance. If your mentor wants you to include subheads in your questionnaire, then go ahead with it. What subheads does he want you to include?

My questionnaire has questions on:

1. Training and workshops
2. Physical working conditions
3. Benefits and facilities
4. Rewards and incentives
5. Appreciation
6. Career opportunities
7. Promotion policy
8. Performance appraisals
9. VRS (Voluntary Retirement Scheme)
10. My Manager/supervisor
11. Job security
12. Employee Grievances
13. Trust
14. Disparity

Hi Sonali,

Thank you so much. I will be including all these aspects like leaves, holidays, non-statutory benefits, etc. What kind of questions can I frame? I had thought of using a Likert scale only. Rest, you suggest. Surely, I will try to speak to employees and gather information. My mentor wants at least 3 to 4 questions under 1 subhead. I am just trying to create questions only.

Take care.

User input:
You can put non-statutory benefits, leaves, and holidays all that under the BENEFITS AND FACILITIES subhead. Use a Likert scale only. Are you in the company now or at home? Which college are you from? Let me see if I can get more questions; I'll post it, okay? All the best. Your sample size is 90-100 people, so I doubt whether you should use open-ended questions because it will take more time, but these questions will help you get proper and good feedback from employees. In close-ended questions, employees sometimes tend to bluff. Also, you won't be able to get suggestions from them. Also, if you use open-ended questions, don't let them write it down in the questionnaire itself. You personally ask them and get their feedback; you will get a good knowledge about their psyche, how they think, how content they are, and various other things you can observe.

Ensure there is a single line break between paragraphs.

Hi Sonali,

I will use a Likert scale only. My mentor said not to include many open-ended questions as everybody will be in a hurry. I will include one suggestions/comments question. Yes, I will speak to employees about what they think and require. I just hope my project goes well. I am from Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida. I am really thankful for all your support.

Take care. Regards, Ankita

Hi All,

I am the only person in HR in my company. I am in a fix; there is an employee in my office who is quite friendly with me and unofficially discusses a lot of things (all her problems). Now, for some time, she feels that her outsourced process is not going well and that she and others may be asked to leave at any time. She is already giving interviews. As an HR professional, how should I handle this? Should I speak to the management or wait until she gives her notice? Please help.

Hi Sonali,

How have you been? I was out of town for a few days. I'm really thankful for your support. I will definitely mail you the questionnaire. I'm still not able to formulate questions on work-life balance. I can only think of asking if employees are able to maintain a balance between work and the rest of their life, something along those lines. I will design the questionnaire in a day or two.

Take care.

The questionnaires were interesting. But in addition to day-to-day situations, one should also look at the big picture - whether or not one is in the right occupation in the first place.
