Dear All,

As an online survey software, we keep updating our product to help our subscribers get more out of the product, Insighto.com. One such attempt is to make our survey templates on the site better and richer. Employee Satisfaction Survey is one of the more popular templates on the site. What we currently have is a generic version of the employee satisfaction survey, the link for which is given below. http://bit.ly/insighto_employee_satisfaction_survey

I have two questions:
1. Keeping the generic nature of the survey in mind, what other questions make sense?
2. What other versions of the Employee Satisfaction Survey could we introduce? For example, Employee Satisfaction Survey for IT Services companies, or Employee Satisfaction Survey for Retail companies, etc.

Look forward to your inputs and feedback.

Dear Dhruv,

You must have invested a reasonable amount of time in designing the questionnaire for Employee Satisfaction Survey (ESS). Nevertheless, there is always room for improvement. Hence my following suggestions:

a) You have given paragraphs but not sub-paragraphs for each statement. It is left open.

b) At times, there is overlap in questions. For example, in Question 5, the last but one statement is "We generally work on realistic deadlines" and the next statement is "My workload is reasonable." Both statements, are they not concomitant? You may prune down some of the overlapping questions.

c) The second statement of Q 9 states "Your manager/supervisor's management capabilities." Is every junior capable of assessing the managerial qualities of his/her manager? Are the juniors capable of interpreting correctly the decisions of the managers? For example, while juniors could be sitting at their work desk, managers could be negotiating with the suppliers very well in the boardroom. In that case, how would juniors know the negotiating abilities of the managers?

d) Moreover, ESS is conducted in order to:

i) Understand the pain points of the staff, what demotivates employees, why employees leave the company.

ii) Understand whether employees feel that a culture of fairness or a culture of justice exists in the company.

iii) Understand what is the feel of the company's culture i.e. it is progressive, bureaucratic, open, puritanical, etc.

iv) Understand the quality of the interpersonal environment in the company. There are indirect questions to assess the interpersonal environment but no direct questions are there.

v) Understand how far the employees trust the organization. Suppose employees do not have any trust in the organization that after getting the survey results, the needed organizational changes would be made. If they do not have this belief, then the employees would fill the answers perfunctorily, making a mockery of the ESS.

vi) Understand if the employees have understood the vision and mission of the company. ESS does not check employees' perceptions on whether management's decisions are consistent with the vision or mission statement of the organization or at times these are contrary.

vii) Understand whether any informal pressure group based on caste, creed, religion, skin color, language, education institution, etc., calls the shots. This leaves marginalized feeling in the minds of others.

viii) Understand if HR or top leadership has a disconnect with the general staff members.

The survey is heavily tilted in favor of junior employees. You may design a separate survey for the managers. You may refer to my following posts related to your post:

Thank you, Dinesh. I believe that we can bring in several nuances into the employee satisfaction survey, and we are working towards fleshing them out. Your comments here will definitely help us re-evaluate several of our versions. Thanks once again!

Dear Mr. Shenoy,

A very good attempt that impresses me, but are you sure of what you really want from the survey, i.e., the aim of the survey?

People with less than three years in the organization may not be competent to undertake it.

A small story on the behavior of staff (you may not agree with me):
A UFO landed on Earth, and the press crowded to them for a landing interview. The head of the team was asked the first question, "Sir, how do you know in which part of the Earth you have landed? It is too big and covers a large number of countries."

He took a minute and said:

a. "Welcome, sir, please be seated" - we know we are in Europe.

b. "Hi, bum, how are you? What can you do for ye?" - we know we are in the US.

c. "Assalamalekum, insha Allah, kya kar saktha" - we know we are in the Arab world.

d. "Excuse me, I can't leave my machine for a second" - we are in Japan.

e. "Baitho yaar, mera boss jo hai na kuch nahin janta. Main usko padatha hoon. Tho kya ho gaya, woh degree lekar aaya hai. Woh tho management ka aadmi hai aur mera chutti rok diya, and main kam kartha hoon aur woh naam leta hai." - you guess in which country you are in.

Satisfaction level is not related only to welfare activities and welfare is an item on the list and not the first one. You may reposition it.

Interpersonal behavior cannot be generalized. Replying to the questionnaire may lead to branding a good taskmaster supervisor as a bad one.

Lastly, you need to make each and every employee accountable for the productivity of the organization. You may like to add a couple of questions on the role of the employee in contributing to the end result.

Blessings,

Wishing you all a happy and prosperous 2015.

Dear All,

I need a questionnaire or format to check the level of employee satisfaction in my company. It's an IT company with around 100 employees, the majority of whom are youngsters. My objective is to assess their issues, concerns, ideas for improvement, and the positive aspects they have to share about the company. Their feedback will be used to enhance the overall company culture. I am looking for a form/questionnaire where they can rate different areas of their work life.

It is urgent for me, and I am looking forward to your suggestions, ideas, or maybe a ready-to-use format for an IT company. Please share the documents at content.angle@gmail.com.

Thanks in advance.
