Hello Nishtha,

My name is Amit Seth, and I work with an IT company in Ahmedabad. I noticed your interest in transitioning your career to the HR field. Do you have any prior experience or specialization in this area?

Currently, HR professionals with a technical background are in high demand due to the increasing number of IT firms expanding their operations here. Having a technical degree in HR can streamline the recruitment process for these companies.

I appreciate your decision to pursue a career in HR. If you do not already have a specialized degree, I recommend obtaining one to enhance your skills and suitability for the field.

Amit Seth

Thank you, Mr. Seth, for the very quick reply.

I do not have any professional degree yet, though I know I have to go through the conventional method of getting an MBA with HR or GM specialization, which I am surely going to do. Till then, I want to acquire some knowledge and prepare myself for the future.

Regards & Once again, thanks

Dear Miss Nistha,

As you work as an Electronics Engineer, you have the option to pursue higher studies in your field. However, your decision to transition into HR is commendable. If you have an interest in HR, then by all means, proceed. The HR field offers a wide scope and a vast area to explore. The deeper you delve into this field, the more focused your interest will become.

It is great that you aim to gain knowledge in the field before acquiring a degree. This will undoubtedly benefit you greatly in the future as you navigate your path as an HR professional.

Stay connected.

Regards,

Amit Seth

A very warm greeting, Mr. Seth.

Nice to hear from you. A few things I would like to say about myself and have a few queries too.

Firstly, though I am an electronics engineer, I am not working as one. I am working on multiple profiles. Simultaneously, I am a testing team member (have learned different automation tools), a technical writer, a creative developer, and also work as a BDE. Just to mention, I have written a mission statement for my company, designed and developed marketing brochures and presentations for customers abroad and locally, designed the website, and written all the content. At times, I also do coding!

Now, as I have involved myself in various domains, I feel I need to specialize in one to acquire a place where I can use all the learned skills.

Being at a management level is something I have always looked for, so I have chosen to pursue HR or GM.

I would like to ask, as you mentioned, "If you do have an interest in HR, then go ahead. It has a very wide scope as well as a wide area to cover up. The more depth you move into this field, the more focused your interest will be." By this, what exactly do you mean? Can you be more specific about the areas of scope after pursuing HR? Also, what would I be doing in this field to be more focused?

There are some more queries which I would be asking on a daily basis.

With warm regards,

Thanks

Miss Nistha,

Sorry for replying late.

It seems you have a lot of experience in your sector, starting from development, testing, Technical writing, BDE. So, you must have experience of more than 3 years.

Anyways, I mentioned this because I believe your interest lies in moving to the Management team. By knowing all this, I can say with certainty that HR would be a good platform for you. Your involvement in writing and creating mission, vision, and other materials for a company indicates that you would excel in tasks such as creating an Induction manual, formulating HR policies, and implementing other amendments. Being engaged in these activities implies that you would be part of the Top Management.

Keep in touch.

Regards,
Amit Seth.

Hi Nishtha,

Well, you have decided to continue your career in the HR field. Even I'm an Engineering Graduate (EEE) who worked in that domain for two years, and after that, I did my Masters in Business Administration specializing in HR. Now, I'm continuing to work in HR. It's a very good job, and if you are very interested in Human Relations, you can continue in this domain. An MBA with an engineering base is an added value.

All the best.

Swati

Hello, Mr. Seth. Looking for a very early reply and suggestion from you this time. My company's HR has left the job, and now the position is vacant. What do you suggest about me asking for the same position? I am thinking that if possible, I could be in this position and pursue a distance learning course that would provide me with an HR degree simultaneously.

I understand you might be questioning how this could be possible in the company. To that, I would say that if I can demonstrate my capabilities and persuade them that I would exceed their expectations in the role, then I believe the management would not hesitate to give me a chance.

I would like to hear your views on this and any suggestions you may have. Please provide your input promptly as I need to make this decision within the next two days.

Thanks & Regards.

Hi Miss Nishtha,

If you are truly interested in a change in your domain, then I would say that this is the best opportunity you have. I am very much sure that you can handle the system with just a little bit of effort. Since you are well aware of your company's rules, regulations, organizational structure, HR policies, and all other systems, you can easily grasp things.

Moreover, it's a good decision to pursue an MBA through distance learning. I was actually thinking of suggesting the same to you. You can pursue it with Symbiosis or many other institutes that offer the same course.

Please keep in touch for any suggestions or help you may need from our side.

Wish You All The Best.

Thank you, Mr. Seth.

Let me jot down other options as you have mentioned that I would be able to achieve it with a bit of effort. I will now discuss it with management about its plans. Hopefully, they will understand me.

Once again, thank you so much.

Hi Nishtha,

Nice to hear from you that you are planning to do an MBA through DDE. Even I did my MBA (HR) from Pondicherry University through Distance Education only when I was working. You can also do an MBA from Symbiosis; it's good.

If you think that your management will be ready to transfer you to HRD, then you can carry on. I believe that since you have an interest in learning and working in HRD, you will surely succeed. Make your management know that you can prove yourself in the new domain, and since the environment is also well known to you, you can do it!

All the best!!!

Hi Nishtha,

Amit here. I am also a Mechanical Engineer and have an MBA in HR. Currently, I am working in the HR department of an engineering and construction company. If you want to leverage your engineering degree, make sure you work with an engineering or software firm; otherwise, you may face limitations.

Obtain a full-time HR degree instead of opting for correspondence courses, as the former holds more value in the market. Additionally, it will align better with your career progression.

Good luck!

Thank you, Amit. I will definitely consider your suggestion of F/T (if I understood correctly, it's Fast Track) degree. Could you please help me in understanding the available options for that?

Additionally, I have a query for which I am seeking a quick answer. It is addressed to Mr. Seth under the same title. Would you kindly provide your view on that as well?

Well, XLRI and IIMs provide a one-year MBA entrance through GMAT, but it costs a lot, 8-10 lakhs. Otherwise, you'll have to go for a regular two-year MBA through CAT and XAT. Good colleges include IIMs, XLRI, Xavier-Bhubaneswar, Ranchi, Bangalore, Symbiosis SCMHRD, SIBM. In HR, very few institutions are good; that is an irony.

Yeah Amit I know about all these institutes and about CAT. Want to know about your say for the query i mentioned. Also, what value the US-Thunderbird University 's distant course would have. Regards

Distant mode certification doesn't hold value in the market, dear, be it from Oxford, Wharton, or anywhere else. Go for full-time, especially from the country where you want to work. Gone are the days when we used to say, "Do MBA from the US and MBBS from the UK."

Got your point, Amit. I will certainly keep that in mind. I would like to have your input on the following query.

My company's HR personnel has left the job, leaving a vacancy. What do you suggest about me applying for the same position? I am considering the possibility of taking up this role and pursuing a distance learning course to obtain an HR degree concurrently. I understand you may be questioning the feasibility of this within the company. To address that, I believe that if I can demonstrate my capabilities and convince them that I can exceed their expectations, the management may consider giving me the opportunity.

I am interested to hear your thoughts on this and any advice you may have. Regards

Dear Kapoornish,

I suggest that you go for a full-time course rather than a long-distance one. Also, some companies provide financing/help for executive education. Please find out if your company provides that and what the terms and conditions are for the same.

Even though your enthusiasm and interest are commendable, please go about achieving it in the right manner. Long-distance education can, at best, be a stop-gap solution. There are numerous executives opting for the same, but if you have the luxury of choice, then I strongly urge you to consider a full-time course.
