Hello! I am a B.Com student currently pursuing my Masters from Symbiosis, specializing in Human Resource Management. I will be completing my course by mid-next year. Currently, I am trying to apply to companies with openings for HR, but my application is not being considered. Is it because I have not completed my course or because I am from a totally different background?

I have also heard that a fresher needs to work in a consultancy for about 2 years before applying to companies. Is that so, or can we try applying to companies even as a fresher?

Thanks!

Dear Lakshman,

There is nothing wrong with your academic background, and there is no need to work in a consultancy to get a job in a company. Just keep trying and don't lose hope; you will get a job pretty soon. I know people in key HR positions without any degree in HR. Moreover, I've also seen people with bachelor's degrees in commerce performing very well in HR and in managerial positions. Nothing to worry about; one day you will get an offer 😊

Dear Lakshman,

You needn't worry at all about your academic background. You may not be getting offers just because you have not completed your course. Wait until the campus placements and see the results then. Otherwise, you can wait till the completion of your course. But keep on applying.

Hi,

There are companies that conduct background checks to assess how strong a candidate is in their functional aspects. I mention this because I have faced such a situation myself, being a techno-functional professional with knowledge in IT and management.

It is crucial to structure your resume in a way that attracts the attention of potential employers. Your resume should be crafted in a manner that increases the likelihood of receiving a call from prospective clients. While you cannot alter the degrees you hold, you can certainly enhance the skill sets listed in your resume.

I am unaware of the specific companies or job portals you have applied to. It is advisable to showcase your project work, including any summer projects, and emphasize the topics covered. Highlight your projects effectively to ensure you receive calls for interviews.

You mentioned concerns about the prevalence of consultancy jobs over direct company positions. Nowadays, many companies offer management trainee programs, whereas previously they preferred candidates with at least 2 years of HR experience. I recommend exploring all avenues and accepting opportunities that align with your preferences.

Stay positive and proactively distribute your profile to numerous companies.

Best regards,

Sandeep
