I worked as a permanent employee in a public sector bank. As per the terms of appointment, I served a 3-month notice period. On the last day of the notice period, I received a letter from the controlling office stating that the competent authority has accepted my resignation from the bank's service with effect from 16/09/2017 at the close of business. When I asked for a relieving letter, they mentioned that the letter received is sufficient. I am unsure if this will be adequate for further employment in government sector jobs or if I require a proper relieving certificate. What options do I have to obtain the relieving letter from my previous employer?

A resignation acceptance letter could be sufficient if it states the fact of relieving too. Some organizations issue a composite order on the last date of notice. If you can share the material contents of the letter, a more definite opinion could be offered. However, since the bank is not agreeing to give you a separate relieving order, you can and must insist on a 'No Dues Certificate'.

NDC certificate + Resignation Acceptance Letter suffices for any future employment.

Every PSU bank has a clear-cut policy regarding the acceptance of resignation. You can find this information on the bank's website or from the HR department. Once your resignation has been accepted, follow up with a letter confirming the handover and takeover of duties, surrender of accommodation, bank property, etc., and request an acknowledgement. Make sure to insist on a no-dues certificate. I am confident that your website or the HR department portal on the bank's website will provide clear guidelines.
