Respected HRs,

My name is Vamsi, and I am a graduate student studying civil engineering. Currently, I am not actively seeking a job. However, I have identified certain areas where I feel I lack proficiency, such as analytical skills, decision-making abilities, and questioning techniques, both in my academic subjects and in my daily life. I also find myself uncertain about my likes, dislikes, weaknesses, and strengths. Without a clear understanding of these aspects, I fear I may struggle to achieve my goal, which is to crack the Indian Engineering Services (IES) exam for which I am currently preparing.

I am struggling to locate my position in life and am anxious about what the future holds if I continue in this manner. One positive aspect I have noticed about myself is that I am adept at socializing and communicating with strangers, friends, and relatives. I am seeking advice on how I can enhance my skills further and address the areas where I feel deficient.

Could anyone please suggest additional steps I could take to improve my skill set?

Thank you.

Vamsi,

Communication is a skill which many people lack. People may have knowledge, but communicating views, knowledge, opinions in a friendly and pleasing manner is a skill which some have. However, I am at pains to segregate communication from the gift of the gab. Communicating certain ideas will need knowledge of the concept/idea being discussed. The mere gift of the gab would not be enough; one would need knowledge of the subject matter and related matters to win over others to your viewpoint. My advice would be to increase your range of knowledge, be knowledgeable on your subject matter, and then your good communication skills can help you. The base on which your communication skill can work is --- Knowledge, pure and simple. You are a civil engineer, so this example should be better appreciated: A tall building requires a strong base/foundation. Similarly, your communicative skill will reach heights if you have knowledge.
