I need to create a succession planning document for critical roles within my company, and I need ideas or templates that can guide me in creating one. I work as an HR Manager for a Telecommunication firm in Nigeria and will appreciate professional input from the house. Thanks

Hi Keemon,

Succession planning is an exercise that should only be carried out at the Board level. As an HR manager, you can only provide the Board with detailed job descriptions. There are lots of articles on the web on this subject; happy surfing! I hope the above helps.

Hi,

I don't agree with Harsh - succession planning is required for any critical job, irrespective of the level. First, you need to identify the critical jobs (defined as the company losing revenue or market share if the position is vacant beyond a particular timeframe), then identify the skill sets for that job/s. You may also decide to provide a different pay scale for such jobs so that you can easily attract such talent from the market pool. Contact me directly if you wish to know more.
