Hi Renu,

I can give you one simple idea.

Firstly take a note on existing HR policies - attendance, recruitment, employee engagement, performance management, etc.

Do that first for your knowledge purpose. Being an HR in the firm, you should anyways know them right.

Secondly study the graphs, study your people. How many of them are on time, how many people take many leaves, who have been the employee of the month, who has been performing consistently, etc.

Sitting idle and asking your supervisor for tasks is not at all helping you because -

You would not learn

If you plan to switch, you would be taken back to recpetionist.

HR is more of proactive activities. Honestly, if you put up there's nothing much HR does. I myself sit idle many times. But in those time, I increase my knowledge, help people out, study my firm, study my people and because of my these idle times, i've been able to proactively suggest my employer few ideas.

I had been the only HR with no one to guide. I had to perform on my own. No one knew what to do including me. Had been through your situation. It's perfect, relax.

Just suggest ideas to your HR Manager on how to improve performance of your people or something like that...

Always remember, in today's time Proactive people are appreciated and valued, rather than people who'd wait for someone to give them something to work on.

Prove your worth, your knowledge by you deciding what is right for you. At the max, you'd be claimed wrong, they'd disapprove your suggestion, you'd fall, but eventually you'd rise. You'd know how things work. Theory is much different and easier than practical life scenarios....

Hi,
This is the common problem where all the people face these days.
Here you need to observe two things.. One you not learning anything from the current employer and second is why is your manager hesitant enough in allotting work related to HR.
I suggest you to talk to your director and tell him the problem you are facing or prove yourself that you can handle things and try to impress him..

Dear Adnaan, I already informed my director but everydtime my manager says ys infront of him but behind him he never asks me a singal a word. I dnt knw wht to do?

Dear Reenu,

There's been quite a brain storming on your situation. I have few questions in addition to them. Have you mapped HR in your firm and checked what are the areas that you can develop? I understand you need to work along the processes to know them. What is the view you have gained so far, even as an observer?

Even if you were managing the processes, you would mostly have view to only the tasks you are managing. Myopia is dangerous when one is delivering in the role and yet remains blind to the big picture. Views are obstructed, unless one have an end-to-end responsibility or an extremely open culture for knowledge sharing. The fact that your tasks dont limit your vision, it opens up for a bigger vision.

You need to learn to the most in your existing role and take my words, nothing stops you from that. Please recall all the escalations that have been handled since you joined and how were they solved. Add this with the information that you have collected from the business processes on how better could it be solved. No one will ever ask you for your opinion, neither you need to share it, till asked. You merely need to stand prepared when the moment to act , calls for you. Observe every problem-solving incident as closely as you can. Let this go beyond HR. Speak to other leaders who can add on to your business acumen. If nothing else, you get to sharpen you thinking process.

You can consider the certification on HR to add on the credibility. Start responding to the queries in forums such as this. Your response may not be accurate all the time, but the effort to learn through helping others, will eventually make you an expert.

When your knowledge and acumen is unparalleled , the best opportunity will find you. Wish you all the best !

Hi Renu,

Things are not very much clear from your posting but still based on my understanding I would like to suggest you following things:

You have completed your PGHRM in 2011 & still you are waiting your company HR Manager to give you some HR work to do.I think it's long time you are waiting for.It's time to look for job change........Because if he has to give you/ assign you some work he must have given it long time before.

See I think some times it's Manager problem also because he cannot give you work of someone else, if he is having already his team to execute that work.

And as you have written above still people use to treat you as receptionist.So, that's true my dear scenario is not going to change until and unless they recruit someone else as a receptionist there & circulate mail that your profile has been changed.

It's true that hence you are working as a receptionist for such a long time most of the interview calls you would be getting will be for the same field.but don't get dishearten...

you can get HR job only as a fresher through any job portal / through references.

I am totally agree with Ms. Abhilasha that you can join any good consultancy & start your career in HR. But check the consultancy before joining. Because there are some consultancy which don't even pay timely.

Even I would like to suggest that if you are doing any admin related work or even employee engagement work then that also you can mention in your resume.

See may be in starting you have to do some compromise with size of the company or the salary they will offer you as a fresher (it can be less then what you may be getting now). But the fact is just to start your career in HR..................

Anyway hoping that my above words would be of some beneficiary to you.
