Hi friends,

I am working as an Executive HR for a reputed company completing one year. Currently, I am handling payroll, recruitments, other statutory compliances, and reimbursements. I am interested in focusing on performance appraisals and training and development. However, in our organization, these topics are not given much importance.

Please suggest whether I should continue or quit.

Hello Rajani,

It is very nice to hear that you are handling payroll, recruitments, other statutory compliances, and reimbursements. If you are not part of performance appraisal and training and development, don't worry. Because a person working in a big organization does not handle all the activities of HR. Instead, all HR activities are divided into different sub-departments.

Keep up the good work and please don't quit.

Hi Rajani,

It is nice to hear that you are interested in Training and Development and Performance Appraisals.

The success of any management professional lies in his/her ability to sell his/her ideas and concepts. You must first make a space for yourself in the organization before you can implement any of your concepts and ideas.

The problem with Training Development is that you cannot show immediate, concrete, and specific returns; hence, most companies are not interested in training. Those who carry out training do so for certification purposes like ISO. Therefore, you will face a similar problem wherever you go; the intensity might vary.

With Performance Appraisals, the problem lies in the fact that there still exists no method by which you can accurately measure the performance of a complex or high-level job. Take the HR job, for example; how would you rate your key areas like Grievance Handling and Counseling? Thus, many companies do not give the system much importance in India. On top of it, most companies don't have job descriptions and KRAs, based on which Performance Appraisals are done.

So, like all of us, you will also face problems in the beginning, and as you prosper and become an important part of your organization, you can implement all of your ideas and wishes.

As for quitting the job, never quit your job because nobody ever listens to the new joiner unless he/she is the Chairman.
