Dear All,

Please help me out from this dilemma. I have 7.5 years of experience: Operations - 4.5 years, Project Management - 2 years, and HR - 1 year. Now, I want to do an MBA (distance), but I am not able to decide which branch I should go for - Operations or HR. Should I look for other courses like PMP or MBA in project management? Some people are saying that doing a distance MBA will not help much. Kindly suggest.

Hi,

If you are planning to join correspondence, then Symbiosis is the best institute to complete an MBA. It is recognized as the 5th position in India. There are some universities which do not have recognition if the course is correspondence, but Symbiosis Institute for Distance Learning has the value. Can think of it.

Hi Om,

The course that you should pursue should be one that adds value to your career and also in the field that's of interest to you. The best judge for that would be yourself.

In case you want to do any course through distance learning, then Symbiosis can be a good choice.

Hope you are able to make your decision.

All the best

Dear OM,

First of all, why do you want to pursue an MBA? If it is for a higher package in the current organization, you would be disappointed. If you want to switch over, then what is the area you are interested in (such as HR, Ops, etc.)? Accordingly, you should decide on the specialization.

As far as regular or correspondence is concerned, go for correspondence because you have enough experience to learn the practical aspects of work conditions, and the theoretical part will be covered by correspondence. As Piscion said, SCDL is the best institute for MBA correspondence. Moreover, there is no big difference if it's MBA or PGDM or any equivalent course.

Cheers, Devashish.

Hello,

Please find out what your career objective is and where you are more passionate about.

We can look at it in two ways - one is to work for earning money, and the second is by working in the area you are passionate about.

In case one: Where you are working for money:

You don't do what you love doing (and ultimately) what you are the best at. Maybe you are a people person by nature and feel passionate about the HR job but ultimately chose an ops profile as you feel the chances of earning are higher. In this case, you keep moving with no proper self-direction or lack of choice from within.

Case 2: Doing what you love

This looks nice - I mean you do what you are passionate about - you work hard and use your creative ability. You know your strong points, and you ultimately know how to have an edge over others in the same area because it's mixed with passion and a desire for achievement.

So you set the path for yourself, and you make someone else pay for what you want (a good pay because you are good at your task).

When thinking about doing an MBA, think about what you will gain through academia that you may not immediately gain with hands-on experience. Just by reading the book, it will be of no help, but knowing how to solve certain issues may be taught through academia.

Other than HR labor laws and acts, everything else must be only through hands-on learning experience. Why not go in for a separate Labor Law course for a year so that you are aware of the labor laws and also have proof of certification for course completion?

I think you could choose MBA - Operations and also learn a Planning Software like Primavera. It will be very helpful.

Regarding full-time or part-time or distance education, please see what is viable in your case. Are you in a position to dedicate two years completely to the course? If yes, great, go ahead. If no, still no problem, look for a course from a reputed institute.

These are my opinions. Kindly think deeply before acting on any of the above.

Hi Om,

Greetings for the day!

After looking into your experience, it seems that you should always go for operations, as you have the maximum experience. However, it depends upon your interest level as well. In my view, you can enhance your career growth in operations by pursuing an MBA. Ask yourself, what do you prefer most for your long-term future?

Feel free to revert.

Dear Sankalp You better do a MBA in HR rather than a operation from Symbiosis Institute. HR have a lot of scope than a opern.
