Hi!

I am a 3rd-year student at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in South Africa. I am currently studying Tourism Management. I need help with an HR assessment task that I have to do, under the following headings:

1. Functions of HR Manager
2. International, national, and regional challenges faced by the HR Manager
3. Ways that the business can meet and adjust to the challenges they are faced with.

I would really appreciate it if someone would take the time to help me with this assignment. It would mean the world to me!!!

Hi Alexia,

On the functions of the HR Manager, I would offer just three main areas of activity which encompass all others: enhancing organizational capability, enhancing individual capability, and championing an effective organizational culture. All this is in order to partner with the business to achieve its strategic and operational objectives. There are a number of administrative tasks involved in supporting some of these activities such as management of compensation and benefits, but all should be in alignment with and designed to achieve the above.

I believe the main challenges of the HR Manager today are around (1) creating a partnership with the business such that HR processes and methodologies truly link to strategy and that the HR function is regarded not as a cost burden but as an enabler and enhancer of organizational capability and a true partner in achieving business results, and (2) the leadership of talent development in organizations.

Ways that businesses can meet challenges are very diverse and depend very much on specific factors. In general, however, adopting Jim Collins' philosophy in "Good to Great," any business needs to ensure it has the right people in the right roles. Once this is achieved, most businesses will be able to develop the right strategy to tackle any challenge.
