Shalini,
The headcount you have quoted is as of July 08, right? If yes, then the (headcount as of July 07 + new joinees - resignees) should give you your headcount as of July 08. Based on the numbers you have provided, it doesn't tally.
If all other information except for the new joinees is correct, then please apply the formula Vaibhav has mentioned: Average number of employees = (July 07 + July 08) / 2.
Hope this information is useful to you.

Hello Shalini,
If my maths is correct, the total number of employees in July 2007 was 277. There were 67 new joiners from July 2007 to [insert cool date here]. The total number of employees from July 2007 to 2008 was 344, with 45 employees resigning during that period. Therefore, the total number of employees in July 2008 should be 299.
Your figure for the same period shows the total number of employees in July 2008 as 234. Could you please explain the discrepancy? What happened to the rest of the employees?
Have a nice day.

Dear Shalini,
As I have mentioned in my previous email, the numbers regarding either the new joiners or your headcount seem to be incorrect. However, if you are confident that your figures for:
- Headcount (July 07 and July 08)
- Exits (Resignees)
are accurate, then please proceed with using Vaibhav's formula to calculate the attrition percentage. Nevertheless, I recommend that you review the numbers you provided before moving forward with this calculation.
