I have been doing a study on the number of hours people spend working. A generalized view of the study shows that almost 50% work beyond normal working hours.
Is this the right way to function?or are people so career oriented that they prefer working to home?or do some people simply sit to show they are working...need views for my study.

Dear Friend,
The Working Hours as stated in the ( Indian ) Factories Act, 1948 says in Chapter VI as under;
(i) Weekly Holiday on the first day of the week, which is Sunday or may be any other day, as may be approved in writing by the Competent Authority for a particular Area. There is a provision for substitution of weekly holiday, under Section 52 so that by complying with the requirements of this section, workers may be permitted to work on the day of weekly holiday. Also provision for allowing compensatory holiday, in lieu pf unveiled weekly holiday.
(ii) Work for not more than 48 hours a week and not more than 9 hours a day. The
Spread –over should not exceed 10 – ˝ hours, unless exempted by the Competent Authority . A rest interval of a least half an hour should be provided in such a way that no period of work shall exceed 5 – ˝ hours.
(iii) An adult person who works in organization for more than 9 hours on any day
or more than 48 hours in week such a person in entitled for the over time
work, wages at the rate twice the ordinary rate of wages in accordance with
sec.59
(iv) Under Sec. 65 gives powers to the State Government to grant exemptions to deal with the exceptional pressure of work, within the parameters detailed in this section.
As such, the concern management may approach to the local Competent Authority and seeking the permission for respective hours of work allotted to their employees before starting the shifts. According to the recent trends in the ‘Adults” working hours, the Government has not announced the working hours exemption.
