Hi,
I had a very strange experience yesterday, when our technical panel and I were taking an interview for a sales position. The candidate had asked for a reschedule for the following day due to some problem and we obliged. He came down to our office to give the interview, we started the interview and he got a call in between the interview, he asked our permission and went out to attend the call. We were waiting for the candidate as well we could hear him talk over the phone and we could make out that he was attending a telephonic interview. Technical panel left the venue. I waited for him to get back for around 25minutes. He got back and told that he had got a call from his manager. I asked him directly were you attending a telephonic interview, he accepted it.
I told him he cannot take an organization lightly and he was rejected due to his attitude. Was I right in doing it? or should have only told him that he was rejected and not spoken about his interview. Please let me know. If you have experienced something similar let all of us know it.
Regards,
Madhu

Dear Madhu,
It was really a strange experience - even to read it also. Attending telephonic interview while a personal interview is in progress is something equivalent to starting looking for a girlfriend or date when one's marriage ceremony is in progress!
Humour apart, cheekiness of the candidate was well evident. If you have turned down his candidature, then it was quite correct on your part.
Thanks,

Hi,
Thats an interesting experience. But don't look at what the candidate has done. Look at why he has done it. It might be possible that if you find out the reason for the same, you would be able to correct yourself not to experience the same in future. No doubts that the candidate has taken your organization and the recruitment process lightly and deserves to be punished. You should have made him feel sorry for his act. But looking at this situation from a different view...is there anything you can do to ensure that the cnadidate who is coming to you takes the organization seriously?? As HR Professionals, we face this on a daily basis. People come to your organization for an interview, no matter what the outcome of the interview is, if they get another call for interview from some other company, they go and attend. Its just natural. One needs to give recruitments the respect rightly deserved. Be it people within the orgnatization or outside.
Share with us how you felt after the interview. This might help us learn from your experience. Which position was it for: Middle level management?

i think u did the right thing.. it feels bad as an interviewee when you dont know why you have been rejected.. moreover some people are so desperate for a job due to financial difficulties that v can empathize with him if that was the situation but you wre there so you would be a better judge..

Dear Madhu,
Once I was got rejected in the interview and later I came to know from my friend working there who refered me asked me whether you said that you already have an offer with another Concern, I said ofcourse yes, I was true to them and said I already have an good offer and gonna join within 15 days. I said this because I thought they will consider me worth as the other concern is the competitor but later he said that's the reason why you were been rejected because his manager said they I" have been given 2 month notice period and now at the last time I came for the interview with them".
One of my friend said the same in some other concern, he was selected with 20% extra CTC but why I was rejected. All depends upon the Judge who sit in the interview chair.... But in your scenario the attitude is what I see.... He should have first switched off the phone when he enter the interview room.....
