What is the difference between a show-cause notice and a charge sheet?

Dear Naresh,
In a disciplinary proceeding, a show-cause notice and a charge-sheet are mostly one and the same so far as their contents are concerned. Both call for the explanation of the delinquent employee as to why disciplinary action should not be initiated on the charges of misconduct imputed against him as narrated therein with reference to the specific clauses of misconduct enumerated in the service regulations/standing orders.

A show-cause notice precedes the charge sheet and the former can be a little loosely worded whereas the charge sheet shall pinpoint the accusation, the disciplinary rule being violated and shall not be vague. The charge sheet is normally the start point of the disciplinary action and shall meet the requirement regarding the contents, the service and consideration of the reply. A show-cause notice can be issued by anyone higher in the hierarchy whereas the charge sheet can be issued only by the authority empowered to do so.

A show cause notice (SCN) is a notice issued by management to the deliquent employee, to show cause as to why appropriate disciplinary action should not be taken against him, for the various charges levelled against him. But a Charge sheet is a document which gives a precise and clear narration of the charges that are levelled against him.
Both SCN and Charge sheet calls for written explanation from the deliquent employee, within the stipulated time and after receipt of explanation, further course of action shall be decided.

Our learned members replies are correct. There is one more point which I would like to mention is by issuing show cause notice you cannot initiate disciplinary process but by issuing charge sheet, you can start the disciplinary proceedings. In other words, show cause notice will be issued for an offence or misconduct of simple in nature, which may or may not be concluded with disciplinary process. But by issuing charge sheet, a disciplinary proceedings will be initiated in the form of domestic enquiry.

The name itself says everything, Show Cause Notice is a Notice given to the employee by an Authority designated by the employer to justify/explain the charges levelled against him/her. The proceeding will take after the justification/explanation given by the employee and after the conclusion of domestic enquiry. Charge Sheet is a final order/letter given to an employee wherein the charges are proved and levelled to him/her wherein the disciplinary action can be taken as mentioned by the learned professionals above. In show cause notice disciplinary action cannot be taken until proved to be guilty
