Dear Ajay,

There is nothing like "modern" and "old" techniques in training for communication skills. There is no clear distinction between them. Games and presentations are just a few of the training methods available. The main objective of communication training is to bridge any gaps that may exist. These communication gaps can lead to wasted time and resources.

I suggest that you study your company's operations to identify instances where lack of communication has caused problems. Developing customized case studies based on these instances will help participants understand the specific communication challenges your company is dealing with.

Thanks, Mr. Dinesh, for your valuable reply. I found communication gaps in operations, and to fill those gaps, please suggest some training or games that will result in good teaching to the employees with great fun.

Dear Ajay,

Go to Google and find out (a) Principles of Communication and (b) Barriers in communication.

Thereafter, interact with the managers working in the Operations Department and the departments that support operations. Note down the cases of non-communication or communication gaps.

While conducting the training, discuss these cases and give an exercise to the participants to relate the cases (told by the managers) to the principles of communication and barriers in communication. This exercise will sensitize the participants.

Later, tell the participants to come up with their own incidents of communication gaps. However, they are not to reveal the cause(s) of the gap. The other participants are to do it. This exercise will bolster their communication attitude.

Please note that the objective of training on communication skills is to improve the communicativeness of the participants. Communication is a matter of mindset or attitude. The objective of the training is to create the right attitude.

The games and presentations may not build the right attitude. I say so with my 20 years of experience in training. Most of the HR professionals live in their world of assumptions. They do not take accountability for the measurement of the ROI on the training. Hence, their unwanted or misplaced belief in the effectiveness of games and presentations.

Thanks,

Communication skills need continuous training and require understanding the entire operations process, policies, KPIs, and KRAs. Building channels for smooth communication flow with minimal time and high accuracy is essential. This involves setting up both written and verbal, formal and informal channels in accordance with standard communication policies.
