I think this is a casual/not mandatory 'internship' in an engineering or other firms, not like the 'internship' for doctors and lawyers, etc., who are required to undergo an internship to qualify for their respective degrees.
Generally, it is understood that 'interns' are only trainees, and they are supposed to stop once the 'internship period' is over. There can be either paid or free (honorary) internships.
