I'm new in this field of HR. Please, I need your help regarding some ethics on how to handle employee problems. As this is a people-centered profession, one has to be humble and calm. However, at times, I really have emotions, but I have to control them and ensure they are not realized by the employees. Dealing with challenging employees can be tough. Your ideas will greatly help me handle such difficult situations.

Dear Anony,

Indeed, HR is a people-centered profession! An HR professional has to wear many hats or fit in different shoes, and some of them may stink too!! Haha... jokes apart. My only advice - Fake it till you make it. It's your career and your calmness.

Regards,

There will always be some difficult or off-the-track employees. They have to be dealt with and cannot be wished away. Is it a science that anyone can learn, or is it an art depending on your innate skills? Many find this question baffling. The answer is, whether it is a science or an art, certain basic skills can be learned, and further growth depends on the efforts you put in and your ability to adapt yourself.

First and foremost is the ability to listen patiently to the other person and satisfy their needs. Hear the other party fully and ensure their satisfaction before presenting your responses. Next, it is important to say what you mean and mean what you say. You need to create an image of being completely honest and consistently live up to it (avoid playing politics). Be aware of the rules and regulations before making any promises, and commit only to what is feasible for you. If a commitment is made, make every effort to fulfill it. Additionally, if there is a last-minute issue in completing a task, inform the other party in advance instead of waiting for them to approach you, as your explanation would then be less convincing.

Try to mentally rehearse what you are going to say and assess its impact before choosing your words. Above all, maintain an optimistic and confident demeanor.
