A student from Bangladesh doing his MA in Applied Linguistics in the UK approached me for help. I came across the following website and found it quite useful to assess my own knowledge. Our daughter in the UK and my brother in India took the tests. Based on that, I have hypothesized that people who have studied in English Medium from early stages will do better in those tests than those who have studied in their own vernacular. Also, those who have studied English as a language in Higher Studies and those who have a habit of reading newspapers, listening to the radio, and/or watching TV programs in English will also score higher points.

Hence, I would much appreciate it if members at CiteHR could spend a few minutes and take the tests and give me the results by sending me a Private Message. The information that you provide will be dealt with very confidentially, and only an aggregated result will be given at CiteHR.

Please also include some general information about your background:
1. Since what age did you study in English medium?
2. Do you communicate in English with colleagues at work?
3. Did you study English as a language in your degree course?
4. Do you read newspapers and note unfamiliar words?

Here is the link to the website https://www.arealme.com/vocabulary-size-test/en/. Kindly take only the following tests:
- Commonly Misspelled Words Quiz
- English Grammar Test
- General English Level Test

Thanking you in advance.

Dear Mr. Narasimhan K,

Thank you for taking the initiative. The quality of English in India is far from satisfactory. This lack of quality is a result of the apathy shown towards self-improvement. It is not a question of whether one has studied in an English medium school or a vernacular medium. I have encountered individuals with poor English skills despite having studied in English medium schools. Conversely, I have also met individuals with excellent English skills who studied in local languages.

What truly matters is continuous learning and improvement. When people become complacent, not even a deity can change them!

In any case, I will take the test; however, I believe these resources will be more beneficial for my children. I will also share the link with them.

Thank you,

Dinesh Divekar
