Dear Mr. Pawar,

Age is not a bar for employment provided the individual is physically and mentally fit to carry out the responsibilities associated with the job. At times, some persons of 60 years of age or above may have the economic compulsions to earn a living or the intellectual urge to share their professional skills. If you do have suitable positions for such people, you can very well utilize their services subject to the service regulations of your organization in this regard. If you are the CEO, you can also relax the existing conditions, if any, in deserving cases.

Dear Mr. Pawar,

Officer HR,

Montana Group,

Mumbai

With reference to your query posted on CiteHR on 13th Oct 17 regarding whether a person of age 60 years and above can be employed/offered employment in an organization/establishment?

In my view, the purpose of pre-employment medical examination, carried out by establishments, is to ascertain whether he or she is medically fit (physically and mentally fit, etc.) to perform the duties allocated to him or her.

Furthermore, once found fit for employment, he or she is subjected to some sort of selection process/interview to further ascertain if he or she is otherwise suitable to work. Whether superannuation or retirement age is fixed at 60 years or less, I am convinced that this is an unexamined legacy from pre-independence rulers' practices to keep Indians in chains or subjugation.

A glance at the fundamental rights guaranteed by our constitution certainly reveals and reinforces that every Indian citizen has the right to practice any profession and thereby be self-reliant by earning his or her livelihood, irrespective of age or other common factors.

You and your organization have the chance to be and remain the pioneer in breaking the age-old shackles and serving the great Indian nation by upholding equal opportunities for honourable Indian citizens, irrespective of any discrimination like gender, age, etc.

Wishing you all strength to be another maverick.
