Dear Seniors,

The spouse of one of our women employees (Grade - Executive) is causing problems on and off inside as well as outside the factory with other employees. We are aware that this is happening due to a strained relationship between the woman employee and her spouse. Please suggest what action we can take in this case.

How is the spouse allowed inside the office or factory? You can deny him entry into the premises (as a troublemaker). Outside the factory or office, you really have no control. Only the woman employee can stop it with interference from her family and friends or the police, and finally, the court.

Thanks, Mr. Ashutosh. I would like to issue an advisory memo to the women employees to inform them that their spouses should refrain from getting involved in the activities of our organization; otherwise, we will be forced to initiate appropriate action in accordance with the law. May I seek your opinion on this matter?

Dear Mr. Rangarajan,

You do not need to issue any advice to the employee. You just have to instruct your security to not allow the concerned person in the office or factory gate.

Also, outside your office or factory premises, you cannot interfere without the request from the female employee. If your office or factory staff is being harassed, they can file a police complaint. The police will give a warning to the concerned person, and mostly, they stop engaging in such behavior.

You can issue an advice note to the female employee, but you are not actually helping her. Instead of trying to build emotional support from the organization, you are distancing the employee from it. She may be going through a lot of trauma, so do not do anything to exacerbate it.

You should instruct security not to allow anybody's spouse without permission from the authorities concerned. In case he/she wants to talk to their spouses, you should allow the working spouse to go to the security/meeting room, talk, and report back instead of allowing the other person into the work area.

If the spouse creates any issues at the office/factory, then the security should try to convince them, or else they should seek the support of the local police.

As far as issues outside the premises are concerned, it doesn't come under your purview. In such cases, either the employee needs to handle it on his own or seek the support of the police.

Your/company's involvement is only necessary if any outsider creates issues for the employees while they are traveling on company-provided transport or when the employee is outside the work area and on duty.

Hope this is clear.
