Hi,

I have quit my job as a Manager-HR in an insurance firm a couple of years ago, as I was expecting a child. Since then, I have been freelancing in HR recruitment. I very desperately want to get back to work as my passion lies there. However, the challenge I face is that my baby is just 20 months old and requires my attention most of the time, as I cannot trust domestic help when I am not around.

A few of my ex-bosses/well-wishers have suggested that I should consider getting into a partnership business by starting my own consultancy. This could potentially solve the issues of managing my child and pursuing my passion simultaneously. I am struggling to make a decision on whether to return to a corporate job or take the leap into starting my own venture.

I am certain that many of you here have experienced or observed individuals going through a similar phase in life after having a baby, trying to determine where their priorities lie. I would genuinely appreciate all your suggestions.

Thank you!
Regards,
Sam

Samhere: I haven't gone through this phase! But I strongly recommend starting your own venture. A venture isn't scary, not when you realize an employment is uncertain in today's times.

Having said that, your own venture will give you the needed flexibility of learning, earning, and keeping fruitfully occupied. Additionally, one of your clients can make you an offer, or you could talk to your client for a full-time role when you are ready to begin.

The venture doesn't need to be in recruitment only. You can explore other facets of HR. Look at PlugHR - I understand they are seeking part-timers/flexi-timers to join them.

Hope this helps.

Dear Sam,

Before making a decision, it is always important to list out the options. You have four options, as outlined below:

a) Continue as a freelance recruiter
b) Get into a full-time job
c) Start your own recruitment venture
d) Continue as a freelancer but also sell something in addition to the recruitment services

Call me on my mobile if you wish to exercise option (d).

Thanks,

Dinesh Divekar
