We are main contractors in the construction industry, and my principal employer has already obtained BOCW registration and is paying cess in Chennai and Pune. My question is, does the contractor also need to acquire BOCW registration since labor inspectors are insisting that we do so?
Please guide me on this matter.

Dear Praveen446 Main contractor also have to take/apply BOCW Registration separately in their name & 1% of Cess amount {excluding tax} has to pay the respective state government on every invoice.

As per the BOCW Act, if the number of deployments exceeds 10, BOCW Registration is necessary. Your recent post indicates that "Contractors do not need to pay cess, as it is the principal employer's liability. However, I am unsure about the BOCW Registration."
The matter of Cess arises only after obtaining BOCW Registration. This is for your information.

Section 7 says every employer shall take registration under BOCOW Act.Employer includes contractors also
