Tanuja, there is no rules concerning joining bonus or signing bonus.
any company can draft their own rules for the same. Some times, the amount of notice period purchased is paid to employee as joining bonus on joining. By whatever name it may be called, such bonus is liable for tax in the hands of recipient.

The concept of joining bonus is practically applicable to advance countries such as US, Germany etc. where you want to attract the new entrants. We normally have sufficient persons available for our joining, provided the company is a normal one and the job requirements are not exceptional. We offer here yearly bonus which is paid at the end of one year so that the new entrant may continue for a minimum period one year after joining and the attrition rate is not increased. All the bonuses, what soever name is given to it, are taxable.
