I am working as an associate in my company, and I have been with the company since 2010. Initially, they offered me a one-year contract from October 2010 to the same date the following year. Later, they renewed the contract from 2011 to 2012. I have now completed my tenure in September 2013 and would like to resign. According to the letter, I am required to serve a notice period during my tenure.
However, I do not wish to serve the full notice period but am willing to provide 10 days' notice. The HR department is insisting that I give a 30-day notice period. I have discussed this with some of my seniors, and they mentioned that once my contract is completed, the company should release me promptly and should not compel me to serve the full notice period.
Please advise me on how to handle this issue as soon as possible.

If the period of contractual employment or the fixed-term employment is specifically mentioned in the appointment letter, the period expires on the last day of the tenure automatically, and there is no need to serve any notice period. No one can force you to serve beyond the tenure in the name of the notice period, and no penalty can be levied on you for the same.

Your contract was upto 2012. Without renewing contract, you are working upto 2013? If so, you are not bound by any restrictions. Pon

This extension is necessary for a proper handover process, as I aim to be professional in my approach. My manager has verbally agreed to relieve me on the same date. However, if, due to some reason (e.g., ego problem), he refuses to grant me the relief, whom should I approach for escalation?
