Shrinkage in retail is always calculated based on the selling price of the merchandise. There are different types of shrinkage, such as pilferage and theft.
Please share the industry type so that the same can be explained better :)

I have always known shrinkage in terms of the retail industry. I was not aware there is shrinkage elsewhere. Simhan's link is news to me. (I don't think Indian BPOs use shrinkage as a term). If you do not clearly specify what you mean, you will get a wrong answer and also waste the time of others.
