Guidance on Resume Preparation and Career Choices for HR Professionals - CiteHR

Hi Dear seniors, Can anyone help me out regarding how to prepare a resume with one year of experience in the HR domain? Actually, I have a problem. I completed my MBA (Finance & HR) in 2011, and my academic project was on a finance topic due to project unavailability and the lack of companies in our surrounding areas. However, my personal interest lies in HR. Due to the unavailability of HR projects and time constraints for project submission, one of my faculty members forced me to do the finance project. Ultimately, I completed it and submitted it.

Here is where my problem began. After completing my education, I applied for HR jobs. I faced challenges during interviews due to my finance project, and recruiters were not convinced by my answers. Eventually, I was hired by a newly established company. I have been with this company for the past 7 months. Since the beginning of my employment, they have been delaying salary payments and have not provided me with work related to an HR executive role. To be honest, I have not received my salary for September and October. Given my family's financial situation and our dependence on my salary, which is crucial as my education was funded through scholarships and donations, I have decided to seek a new job.

Resume Content Query

Please assist me and provide a solution to my query after reading this. My question is: Is the academic project necessary on an experienced resume? What information should be included in the resume, and do you have any tips?

Thank you.

Lack of focus, distraction, and mistakes made during your education, as indicated by your query and history, are your main problems, and you are now well aware of them. First, I would like to know about your work responsibilities and the tasks you are performing there.

Regarding Your Resume

The very first thing to note is that a resume is a brief document that highlights an individual's experience, qualifications, and skills. Qualifications and other details you have explained here with a request for help in making a resume, but the main contents that you are supposed to share are not included, i.e., work responsibilities.

A good resume contains basic information about the applicant, organized in a way that is easy for the reader to comprehend. Clear contact information is usually at the top, followed by work experience, educational achievements, a list of skills, relevant certifications or awards, and contact information for references, though not necessarily in this order. The organization of a resume is a fine art and requires some work to create a strong one.

Now, your query and the problems you have experienced clearly show how much you are distracted. You now understand why recruiters are not showing interest in your resume and what problems are causing this. Also, you do not have much experience and have just started your career, so basically, you first need to decide what you actually want to do and what your interests are. You need to recognize whether you are good at HR or Finance. It seems that, for some reasons, you lost control and made some mistakes. However, until you recognize your real interests and skills, you will always be distracted.

For example, you have worked on project reports on finance but never took this seriously because of your interest in HR. However, you have also not worked with HR functions, making your situation worse and creating problems for you. Recruiters are not satisfied with your answers due to your lack of confidence and experience that comes with practical work and knowledge.

Steps to Move Forward in Your Career

Step 1 - Realization & Recognition: You have to find out what you are good at and knowledgeable in - Finance or HR.

Step 2 - Focus on Interest: If you find that you have good knowledge in Finance rather than HR, which is your interesting function, you must pay attention to Finance as it can offer you more opportunities. You admitted that you have not been given much work and responsibilities in HR with your first employer, so you need to seek more focus and work hard. You have to choose one subject to focus on and start working on it.

Step 3 - Work on Selection/Decision: Once you have decided on a subject based on your interest and knowledge, you need to start working on it. For example, if you choose HR, you have to learn as much as possible about the functions of HR and the areas defined under this function.

You can start learning from various study materials available, but the most important thing to keep in mind is your hard work and learning skills, which need to become habits.

Step 4 - Learning from Experience: As you mentioned, you have gone through many interviews, so now sit down and note the questions and your answers in a notebook that recruiters have asked you. These questions asked by recruiters can help you understand their expectations and requirements for a candidate like you.

For example, if you were unable to answer questions about EPF & ESIC deductions when asked, you must learn and improve your knowledge about them.

Step 5 - Update your CV with the correct and accurate details of your current education, skills, and achievements, and apply for jobs as a fresher or with 1 year of experience. Attend interviews with more knowledge and confidence this time, and you are likely to get job opportunities.

There are many companies/recruiters hiring freshers or candidates with 1-2 years of experience, so do not lose hope and prepare sincerely.

Best of luck.
