Dear JG Dobbs,
I think it is a good idea....i was using Excel sheet as my database and it is good for small companies...and with excel we can generate any type of reports...consolidate all the data using pivot table, filter to get required data, mail merge...etc...sometimes i feel this is better than any HRIS...., but later i realised that HRIS is better because it has only one database and the same gets updated...whereas...in case excel, all files wont be updated in the same way and there would be multiplicity of sheets or files which we may use for different purposes., and to update all would be a difficult work( If there are more than one HR person in the dept)...but with HRIS...we will have a reliable database from which we can import data into excel...and give any type of reports....at any point of time...
So even though i love to work in excel....the scope of its usage is limited as it is difficult to have only one file for all your applications.

 I was thinking in the lines of more templates of excel or even word PowerPoint or access. For some examples people have designed a template that tracks personnel, vacation, and sick days of their employees. I also saw somewhere else on this website a template for an employee attrition report. I was thinking if some one had a project to do it would be good place for some to go to get an idea on how to start. Attached are some example and maybe a few to start the database.

Well Unfortunatly with that link all those templates you need to have at least Microsoft Office 2003 or later. But hey if you have created any personal ones that you have used for you HR please share and post them.

Dear jaya,
you are on right track. If company size increases you can keep your tabular data in excel supported database like MS Access or RDBMS
and pull in data from there.
Now a days excel is being used as a very handy tool and can be used as a multi user HRIS application.
thanks,

Thank you umalme, I am certainly thinking in that level now...to use a system so that we can import data into excel for day to day applications. Take care..
