I wanted to take the opinion of seniors about this new section that we intend to create. The infrastructure costs are on the rise, and we need to figure out some new revenue-generating avenues before we run dry.

The idea is to create this section called the "Industry Insights & Secrets" - this will be a private section where you only get access to all the material if you share some useful insights or some interesting industry secrets.

In the case of industry secrets, the post is sent to us via an online form, and no information about IP - just the username of the forum will be required to provide access to this private section.

The information which will be published by us will not contain the company name but just the sector they work in.

The "secret" posts made will be completely anonymous and will be posted by us, and the information provider will have lifetime access to this private section.

Those who just want access without sharing any information can get access for a subscription fee. A special newsletter will be sent to all subscribers and members when new information is added.

All of the money collected will directly go into infrastructure and specialized content development, which will again only be shared in this section exclusively.

Now the questions:

1. Since I am not from the corporate world - I would like to know if there really are THAT many secrets and insights to make this section interesting enough.

2. Do you think people will come forward to help create this section - would you?

3. What is a good price for a subscription to such a private area?

4. What kind of content would you be interested in - interviews, special reports on the industry... anything else?

It would be great if members can chip in their ideas.

Sid

Dear Mr. Roy,

The creation of the Industry Insights and Secrets Forum is really useful, and I welcome the idea of its creation. Please accept my sincere appreciation for this innovative idea. I am in support of establishing this forum.

A nominal fee as an annuity may be collected from the members, and it can be utilized for developmental needs. Access to the Industry Insights and Secrets should be granted to all subscribed members. However, the company name and thread initiator's name (including the username) must be moderated before being published in the newsletter. Furthermore, opinions and views can be forwarded to the thread initiator for the correction and development of their organization.

The moderators should be tasked with correcting the messages, conducting spell checks, and changing company names and usernames. Let's also expect comments from other members so that it can be fine-tuned.

Thank you.

Hello Sid,

A good idea, per se. But a few queries - more for clarity than anything else.

1. What's your definition of 'secrets'? This is a very generic and all-encompassing word, so to say.

2. I am not sure about this, but do you think there could be situations when any company could invoke NDA and such instruments against the thread initiator? Irrespective of whether the member's or company names are mentioned or not, it wouldn't be very difficult to get the 'implicit' meanings of the words used or not used for those in the industry. In that case, what would be CiteHR's stand vis-a-vis the members posting such threads? In short, what are the chances of legal issues cropping up and the subsequent action?

3. Regarding the subscription fee, it may be tough to put a figure on this aspect right now. One way to handle this aspect could be to use the model some online forums use - begin with the service being free of cost and make it a payable service as we move on. Depending on the response/usage, which would, in turn, depend on the type/quality of content being submitted to this section/service, I am sure a more accurate figure could then be arrived at rather than blindly fixing any fee now.

TS

@Bhaskar - Yes, the section would have two-way access - either the person provides some relevant content for the section or pays a subscription to have access. The one difference would be that any content provided will grant the member lifetime access, while the subscription would be monthly payable.

@Sateesh - By secrets, I mean both industry tricks and tips, and incidents or practices that are unknown. However, by secrets, I don't mean details about crimes, bribes, etc.

The legal issue will always exist, and it may be more concerning operating from India. If it were in the US, there would have been at least some sense of the legal framework. Nevertheless, in the case of secrets, it would ultimately be up to us to decide whether to publish it in the private area. As tips would be anonymous, it would be challenging to verify any facts in the articles, and we may become subject to implicit libel. In any case, it would be our decision to publish it or not, and we may choose to avoid publishing highly sensitive material.

Another option is to keep it clean and focus on creating premium content like interviews and industry reports. There are various ways to source them, but the cost of acquiring the material may be quite high. I also wonder if there are enough senior members interested in such content. A comprehensive report can be costly, especially if we need rights to distribute it in a private section. So even if we publish some material every month, the costs can escalate.

The issue, however, is not just the cost; I am genuinely perplexed about the preferences of the senior management section. Most probably don't have time to review lengthy material, so it needs to be concise. The topics they may want to see covered remain a mystery. What would be truly engaging content other than controversies or bold speculations?

Sid
