Hi all,
I am facing a problem submitting my ITR online. I downloaded the ITR-4 excel utility from the ITD site, but when I try to fill in my income from salary, it shows the cell is write-protected.
After that, I created my ITR in Word format and converted it to XML using the "save as" command. However, when I tried to upload it, an error occurred.
Can anyone suggest a solution?

Hi Anuj,
First thing, you need to follow the instructions properly, and it doesn't matter if you are using MS Office 2007 or 2003 because the Excel utility that you have downloaded is a compatibility software and can run on both 2003 and 2007 Office.
Secondly, when you open this Excel Utility, you will get a security warning if your Macros are disabled, i.e., "Security Warning: Automatic Updates of your Links have been disabled." You need to enable this first.
Now, you just need to read the instructions and start using this ITR-1 form. Add your salary details properly, and for other sources of income, you can input the total amount in the column labeled "Income from Other Sources."
Thirdly, you can generate an XML file using the Save As option because it is impossible to do this generally. One needs XML coding or proper XML generator software if they want to generate this. But the best thing is that this Excel Utility already has the XML generation coding, so there is no need to do it yourself by using the Save As option or any other method. You just need to complete your form and then validate it by clicking "Calculate Tax" and later generate the XML. One very important thing to keep in mind while generating or saving the XML file is to NOT CHANGE THE NAME OF THE XML FILE.
I have attached two screenshots for you, and I'm sure this will help you.
Once you are done with the above procedure, you can easily upload your file, and it will only take a few seconds.
