Dear all,
In the past in the UK, like in India now, university and higher education sector tutors did not require any teaching qualification. However, it was mandatory for school teachers. All that changed in 2000 as a result of the "Dearing Report" (The National Committee of Enquiry into Higher Education") and the Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (ILTHE) was formed. (For more details see Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education - NPC and About The Higher Education Academy)
Those that did not have a Teachers' Training qualification could apply for a membership of the Institute by submitting a document justifying the claim. I have attached the content of one application.
The HE Academy also introduced National Teaching Fellowship Awards to reward excellence and improve the standard of learning and teaching through dissemination of the work done by these National Fellowship Awardees. For more details please see National Teaching Awards - Higher Education Academy
I have also attached a submission made for the award a few years ago. I hope members find it useful.
Have a lovely weekend.
