Hello Gautam,
Competency Mapping in a very simple language is "Competency is a person's/individual's inbuilt characteristics which enables him/her to deliver the superior performance in his given/desired role."
So now Mapping means "To measure those competencies in a proper way that the individual's inner strengths and abilities are utilized for the overall Organizational Development."
For Competency Mapping the knowledge of Human Behaviour and psychology should be require.
These are the basics of the Competency Mapping that everyone should know.

Dear Mr. Gautam Rai,
1) To understand competency mapping, kindly List down your ABILITIES, CAPABILITIES, PREFERENCE, SKILLS(NON TECHNICAL & TECHNICAL), TALENT and HABITS.
2) Also try to answer HOW COMPETENT ARE YOU IN HANDLING YOUR CURRENT ROLE.
3) Map the same with your current ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES in your organisation.
Perhaps you will understand the process COMPETENCY MAPPING which is time consuming process because you will take time to understand yourselves in similar way one who does competency mapping needs to understand his employee in all aspects and all levels.
Please consider my attachment which i found at citehr. I modified to meet my company's requirement.
With profound regards
