I am Shankar working with a Leading BPO in Chennai as HR Executive. I would like to get your suggestion in a very serious and sensitive issue that is happening in our concern. One of the top most management person in this concern is behaving very badly to the female employees, particularly involving in harassment with the female employees. One of the employee was affected very much with this issue and did a complaint to me. As a junior staff I helped her in typing a formal official complaint against that management person and adviced the employee to talk to the HR Head. But the HR Head clearly told the employee that she cannot do anything against that management person abruptly. I really feel very ashamed as I cannot do justice to my job as a HR. Kindly advice how to handle this..

Most of the Staff people do the "Things " to save their skins. Buttering is an integral part of corpoarate scenario, Try to speak other than " HR Head " " preferrably " Owner / Director " alongwith 100% evidences & eyewitness.
If the issue is really genuine then I am sure the management " person " will be punished.
In most of the cases there is only malicious allegations but no supportive evidences.

The agrieved female could approach police department or NCW. Also file a case in court for direction to managment to look into the complaint.
Female could also write to leading newspaper/visual media to spread the harassment.

I would recommend you not to take actions without thinking the future consequences. You can advice her to check with the National Woman's Commission and to inform them the issues along with the confidentiality which they have to assure about.
Again when the issue being supported by a mass/recognized team/council the management will feel to correct the person involved as it is the matter of their reputation/good will.
Do handle these cases with much care. Good luck!

You can obtain inputs from the internet on the subject and request the aggreived female employee to file a written complaint to the Head HR and seek an acknowledgement. There can be repurcussions but someone has to bell the cat isn't it.
Harassment of female employees by superiors needs to be handled firmly no soft corners please as it will have severe ramifications in future..

It is disgusting to read about what is going on in your organization. One cannot be a silent spectator to such happenings. Sexual harassment at work place is a serious offense. You as an HR executive should take up the matter boldly, and if need be, the matter should to reported to the police. By being silent to such anti-social and criminal acts, we are also indirectly in league with the criminals. Moral and ethical norms lay the foundation for the growth of an individual and also of an institution. Act fast and be true to your conscious.

Without getting judgemental or emotional, dealing with such issues within the ambit of the organisation, especially when a senior employee is involved, may not result in any worthwhile action.
But at the same time, you need to exhaust ALL the options before you go out of the Organisation--to NCW or the Media. Like Prashant suggested, approach the Owner/Director [assuming it's NOT him/them who is involved] and see the result.
Approach the NCW or Media only if you don't find any action within the Company. Frankly, I don't think police will be of any help if YOU approach them--given the clout of the individuals involved. And like Mayuri suggested, build-up the necessary proofs thru a sting operation--BEFORE the thing is blown into public domain.
