The trouble with the loyalty is that it cannot be purchased. If you wish your employees to be loyal to your company then first check whether leadership shows the loyalty to the organisation. If leadership does not show the loyalty towards company and its employee then don't expect the employees to be loyal.

Few business leaders work long or take fewer number of days of leave to show how are they loyal. But real promotion of loyalty happens when leadership exhibits value-based behaviour or does not give short shrift to the law.

Secondly, in today's business environment what is important is not loyalty but commitment. Please make a note that employee may be loyal but may not be committed. Former could be towards person and acceding to what the top management says could be dismissed as loyal whereas latter is towards the work itself.

For hrm789: - Employee welfare measures do not promote loyalty. Neither giving some economic sops to the employees helps them becoming more loyal. Try to understand difference between/among these concepts.

Dear Manu,
- Loyalty can be increased by IMPROVING THE BENEFITS such as Life Insurance,Hospitalization, sick leave.
- Employees want to feel RESPECT and want to feel as if he/she is valued.
- Employer should Recognize Employees Contribution.
- Employer should try to conduct training program so that employees can feel improved.
- Rewards should be given for hard work/ and for good performance.
- Good Working Environment and salary packages.
So these are some factors which can help to increase the loyalty of an employee.

Dear Shiwani Walia,
I beg to differ with you as far as the first line of your suggestion is concerned. Fringe benefits are not known for increasing to employee loyalty. Would you mind to share with this forum the source of this information? I am ok with other suggestions.
I will wait for comments by other members as well.

Dear Manu,
Attrition is a common problem in the corporates across the Globe and therefore many companies have come out with a practice of awarding Loyalty bonus / Retention Bonus if an employees stays with the company for a particular period.
Please note that such bonus can be introduced at any point of time and all employees who stays with the company for that specific period (4 years is very logical) from the date of announcement of such bonus will get Retention Bonus / Loyalty Bonus as per their grade. Amount of Loyalty Bonus / Retention Bonus will change with the grades of an employees. Employees working at higher grade will get higher Loyalty Bonus / Retention Bonus and employees working in a lower grade will get lower Loyalty Bonus / Retention Bonus.

Dear Mr. Divekar,
I am fully agreed with your opinion as there is no scale to measure the loyalty. This can be done in a way that if from upfront the leaders are setting some sort of example for the subordinates then it can work. But then again it depends upon the leaders to come forward. So the commited leadership can ultimately do the job, rather than any loyalty program/training/bonus.

Its has been a gr8 to read such wonderful suggestions on a really very grueling topic among HRs. I agree that loyalty can t be purchased but edited. We become loyal to those who are loyal to us, simple funda but yet very practical. Only way to buy loyalty is to make them feel that company cares about them. Their every little effort is counted. No one can be loyal when he wants to be loyal it's a process which takes has it's own time.
So, if want someone to be loyal to us, don't get concerned about it just care for them, you will definitely enjoy the fruit of loyalty.

Dear Colleagues

In today's business parlance, loyalty has vanished both for the employer and employee. Employer feels that someone has not moved out because he/she did not get openings elsewhere. Employee feels that money is more important and prefer to switch as many jobs for higher pay. Loyalty was an old concept wherein people join the company as management trainee and rose to higher levels in a span of 20 years and the company was encouraging such talent. But the newage era thinking is look for fresh blood and fire the old horses. I can sight an example of a person who has put in 10 years of service and contributed to the organisation and he was never given an overseas opportunity. He is always overlooked and others in the same level are paid skyhigh salaries but he is not treated on par with the same level. What happened to the loyalty here? The so called leaders are timid and they always echo YES to the management's views. If anyone differ they are sidelined and loyalty takes a backseat. There should be a norm on par with company law which should mandate a prescribed number of people in an organisation with specified backgrounds and years of experience linked to it. Then only the companies will accept loyalty. Else loyalty has lost its sheen.
