The Ministry of Human Resources and Development (HRD) has decided to withdraw the "deemed" status awarded to 44 universities in the country, stating they were being run as "family fiefdoms" and not on "academic considerations".

The decision taken by MHRD to de-recognize 44 deemed universities is just on the basis of a 10-minute presentation made by respective institutions, which is highly objectionable and unethical on the part of MHRD. I understand that Mr. Sibal wants to redefine the education system, but for that, I don't think anyone should be allowed to play with the system.

Let me brief you all about the case. Lawyer Viplav Sharma had filed Public Interest Litigation in 2006 in the Supreme Court seeking regulation of deemed universities in the country. In this regard, an affidavit is filed by the HRD Ministry in the Supreme Court, which says the review committee found only 38 institutes fit to have the deemed university status. Other institutions may be suggested to go back to their earlier status of college if they fail to fulfill the requirements within a certain period of time.

It may be noted that the review of deemed universities was being carried out by two separate committees of the HRD Ministry and UGC. The HRD Ministry committee comprising Prof. M Ananthakrishnan, Prof. Mrinal Miri, Prof. Govardhan Mehta, and Prof. P N Tandon have finalized the report after going through the presentations made by the deemed universities. On the other hand, the UGC review panel has given its report after making a visit to these universities. The decision to derecognize the status of deemed university will be taken on the basis of the reports submitted by these two bodies. Moreover, only UGC can take any action against educational institutions.

Further, the UGC review panel has given a clean chit to Graphic Era University Dehradun, and it was published in The Times of India dated Saturday, 12th Sept 2009. An institution is awarded the status of a deemed university by the HRD Ministry only on the advice of UGC, so the HRD review committee cannot disregard the clean chit given to deemed universities by the UGC.

I request students, parents, and the general public to keep faith in Graphic Era University.

This is "INDIA SHINING" because of the attitude described below:

1. Once an American traveler visited India, went back, and met his fellow pals (who migrated from India around the 1970s). He asked them about their homelands/grounds, but the American was silent with no answer to this question.

2. When asked whom he met, the American instantly replied with a laugh - Bengali, Punjabi, Rajasthani, Assamese, Tamil, Mallu, Hariyani, a little bit mixed of unbiased (like Gujarati, Marathi, Karnataki, etc.) but surprisingly "NOT A SINGLE INDIAN."

This is INDIA SHINING where in good schools during the assembly, an oath is recited every day before the beginning of class periods to educate and nurture respectable human beings for the upcoming society:

"INDIA IS MY COUNTRY
ALL INDIANS ARE MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS
I AM PROUD OF ITS RICH AND VARIED HERITAGE"
