Hello Navin,
I did my best but it's notworking because,
the dept codes which are metioned in the sheet are in the format of dates so for this the solution is u have to write a macro to get the count.

Hi,
What I want is instead of typing criteria in the formula can't I refer it to specific cells. so that I don't have to type "dept code" in each cell.
In excel spreadsheet there is example of both the situations in one I typed the "dept codes" and it worked and in other I have given cell reference and its not working "result is zero".
I think this explaination should be allright.
Thansks for ur efforts.

Hi Manikanth, Thanks for trying. In fact this is what one of my excel expert friend told me. But I though to have a try. As there is always a "Sava Ser on Ser". Thanks for ur help.

Hi naveen,
It's same as you have done in column E,
If you want headcount dept. wise, first u need extract dept. data from "default cost account" column by using of left formula. attached here your file with formula...... Sheikh

this is custom function you are using, so this may not work on cell reference. I have used another countif which is giving the same results, hopefully will solve your purpose. Cheers

HI
You should understand that the excel functions reduce your calculation and are error free. the function countifs will work with large data.
I dont think there is a solution for your query.
For more clarity.....your sheet has a column "c" which is to be counted dept wise....right...so you used countifs command and got the number of employees in that particular dept (i.e.'1-1-11'). If you refer to a specific cell and count...it will not work.
Hope it is clear

Hi there,
You are a CHAMP. This is what I exactly want. but I was using Countifs instead of coutif.
But still the formula use used COUNTIF(C:C,"*"&D233&"*"), went over my head.
I know end result is exactly what I want and I will save this worksheey, so I can refer the function u used in future.
But can you help me to understand why "*" is different to "* which I have used.
Many thanks for your help buddy.

Navin
