I really need your help in this because I am utterly confused. There is a SAP-HR course from Siemens which is about to start from 23rd Feb '09, and it's around 3.10 Lacs, including the certification and taxes. It's a 20-day full-time course. I have around 5 years of experience as a Generalist HR and now want to try my hand at SAP. My apprehensions are:
1. Will getting the training directly from Siemens be much better than getting it from other institutes? (in Hyderabad)
2. If not, then which is the best institute that offers this course in Hyderabad?
3. I have no clue about SAP as of now. How will the job prospects be after I complete my training and cert?
4. Will I have an added advantage if the training is directly from Siemens?
Looking forward to hearing from you all soon as I have to enroll by this weekend else, I'll lose the seat.

First of all, kindly know what SAP is. SAP is nothing but an ERP software, similar to MS Excel. The only difference is that you can customize SAP according to your needs. For that customization, you have to undergo training and spend money to learn it. This customization can be functional or technical. For technical customization, it will change your field and require some prerequisites of computer language. On the other hand, functional customization involves closely working with a technical person and providing HR functional inputs so that they can design the framework for your client organization or your own organization.
The lowest level of knowledge required for working on SAP is as an end user. I have worked on SAP as an end user for one year. As an end user, the systems are already set up and working in place by the functional and technical consultants. My role is to do data entry and generate customized reports. For HR professionals, general knowledge and simple knowledge are enough to be an end user of SAP. For instance, viewing reports in SAP, generating reports, and updating the database.
If you want to delve deeper into SAP, you will need to focus solely on it. As a SAP Functional Consultant, your main tasks will involve building frameworks for clients so that employees can easily enter data and generate reports. You will prepare blueprints and troubleshoot implementation problems. Traveling onsite may be required based on job and company requirements. Similar to how a Network Engineer handles networking and computers, a SAP consultant does the same for SAP.
Technologies are rapidly changing, and SAP being an ERP software, amendments, modifications, and changes are bound to happen. This process may not occur as quickly in a Generalist HR profile. Therefore, staying updated and continuously learning new technologies is crucial. Your job will become more computer-oriented rather than the current mix of computer and people-oriented tasks.

Even people have suggested me to go for SAP from Siemens, but I can't spend this much money. So please suggest to me, is it worth doing it from anywhere else? Also, what is the scope after completing this module?

Wow! Ravi, nice explanation. Then, I think I need not spend this much money on this as I don't have any interest in programming. I did DNIIT too, but that doesn't interest me. So, I will just learn to work on the SAP ERP.

Let me tell about myself. I'm working as a Trainer since the last 3 years, encompassing process and behavioral training. I'm also interested to know more about SAP and how can it help me personally to excel in my professional growth. NEED HELP. :icon1:

As of now, all companies are looking only for candidates with implementation experience, so the trend will continue for some time. What you can do is not waste 3 lakh at Siemens but instead learn SAP from someone who is actually working in a company for maybe 4-5 years. Try to gain as much real-time implementation knowledge from them and then attempt to get into a company. Otherwise, look for SAP partner companies where you can claim experience. Anyways, it's a tough task ahead. I know because I'm caught in the middle of it. But success bears the golden fruit as SAP pays excellently!
