Hi forum,
I am from India. I am an employee of an organization. I just wanted to know that what all the documents are required to get from the HR at the time of joining the company like offer letter, engagement letter, employment letter etc.
Are the above documents in series? Are there any other documents along with those? What does each documents specify? What documents should bear my sign and company management sign?
Give the list like which document or letter follows which document or letter.

Dear Supriya,

I "THINK" that Rahul is not asking what documents he has to "SUBMIT " to HR at the time of joining, he is asking what documents he has to "TAKE " from HR at the time of joining. (Rahul correct me if I am wrong & Supriya is right. If I am wrong then please ignore the details what i have mentioned below)

Dear Rahul,

At the time of joining there are not too many documents that you to have ask from the HR. The two most important will be the "Offer Letter " which can also be said as "Letter of Engagement" Or "Letter of Intent" which just signifies that the company has offered you a job. You have to sign two Hard Copies on which HR will keep & another one for you.

On the same date or may be after a couple of days you will get an

"APPOINTMENT LETTER " which will be a more detailed Letter consisting of all the Terms & Conditions which will govern your employment with the Company whether you are a Permanent Employee or a Temporary Employee. Now that is another very important Letter which Confirms that you are actually an employee of a Company. It depends that either you have to sign on every page of the Appointment Letter or May be just One in the end after reading it thorougly. Same thing here will work, One Copy for yourself & one for the Company records.

Just remember that both the above documents are not standardised & depend from company to company. For Example some Company will give you just one Letter which will termed as both Offer & Appointmemt Letter, similarly another Company will give you two different letters & some other Company will give you just one Offer Letter which will consist of all the Terms & Conditions of your Employment so it depends on Company to Company.

Similarly if someone has been taken as a "INTERN " OR " SUMMER TRAINEE" then a different letter will be issued & so on.

Surely ask for that Letter (whatever the company may name it as ) which consist of all the Terms & Conditions of your Employment & clearly declares you as the employee of the Company mentioning your Salary details, Probatation period etc. if you are going for a permanent employment.

Apart from these One or Two letters which are important enough there can be more Letters/ documents but they will difffer from Company to Company & a HR person of that Company can brief you better on that. (like Background Verification Form/ PF Forms/ Personal Detail Forms etc.)

Also for Example - Quite a few companies issue a seprate "LETTER OF CONFIRMATION" once the employee sucessfully completes his "PROBATION PERIOD " whereas you have other companies who mention it in the Appointment Letter that on "SUCCESSFUL" completion of the probation period the employee will be "deemed" to be confirmed & no confirmation letter will be issued seprately until & unless some other letter is issued to the employee stating that his probation period has been extended.
