Dear Sir,
I would like to clarify for the Safety Factor for Mobile Crane / Lifting Gear.
For Mobile Crane,
If we have mobile crane's SWL of 48,500 Kg at boom length of 11.5m & 6 m load radius. What is maximum tonnage, can we able to carry??
For Lifting Gear,
My materials is 12 Ton. I have 2 lifting point. Can I use 2 nos. of 6Ton wire rope, for this materials??
What are the safety factors for the crane and lifting gears??
Hope you advise on this.
Thank you.

Dear Safety Officer,

Answer to the first part.

If SWL is 48,500 kg at specific boom length and radius you can lift the same load- only lift and nothing else. Even this requires a second thought. This load you cannot move forward/backward or rotate. A crane lift nearing the capacity of the crane at a particular configuration has very many factors to consider.

The main factors which affect the lifting of a load are:

• The weight of the load, which includes the weight of the load block, slings, and handling devices.
• The shape of the load.
• The height to which the load is to be raised.
• The final position when raised and so on.

Determine the boom capacity limitations. These include the length of the boom and the capacity at different radii. To lift the load higher, the boom angle must be lowered. The crane has now decreased capacity and the stresses imposed on the crane components are increased.

Finally the LMI or load chart of the crane helps to make a safe lift. Always use it.

Remember crane operation is a skilled job – leave it to trained men.

Answer to second part.

If you are using a lifting beam (Spreader bar) and only vertical hitch yes. If not NO.

There is something called hitch in crane rigging. It is the arrangement of slings. There are various types of hitches like vertical, chocker and basket
.
Capacity of the sling shown on the tag or punched on the hook is for vertical hitch only. That is, this sling if attached to the load vertically it has the full capacity. If it is connected at an angle (Chocker) the capacity is drastically reduced.

Dear Naidu

No separate licences issued for driving vehicles which you mentioned in the query. These are covered under the ‘Non-Transport vehicle’ category under Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989. Attaching the list of Non-Transport Vehicles for your information. So normally industries ensuring that the drivers must have Heavy License. That's it.

Companies have different approaches and few are stated below:

1. Ask the drivers to add the description of the class of this non-transport vehicle into their Heavy License. There is a provision and many RTO issuing the same as well. You can see form 8 in the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989.

2. Many industries sending the drivers for getting vehicle operation and safety training to the manufacturer or supplier of those equipment's itself.

3. Conducting in-house operational and safety training to them, taking operational test, confirming they are competent to drive, then handing over the operation charge.

For all the above mentioned approaches, base remains same, i.e., the driver must have Heavy License.

Hope this helps.
