Good Morning Team,
I am very concern, wondering and thinking about appreciations received by members in CiteHR and Knowledge Certification issued by CiteHR accordingly.
There are different types of appreciation received by members some of them are knowledge based (very few) and some of them are fun based (Maximum) them how could we evaluate the knowledge of CiteHR member bases on that appreciation.
It is tough to understand that member got 300+ appreciation and must be knowledgeable.
Think before appreciate someones knowledge.

Appreciations were implemented to thank members for their contribution. Rather than posting a one line thankyou, the appreciation button allows a one click response and promotes the members to post, only what is meaningful.
The point you have raised, is a different area for discussion, which is more similar to receiving stars or ranking.
Suppose I respond to a question and share a solution which I either heard, or even a document received, from someone else. Now the member finds the document or the post useful, so he thanks me. That doesn't make me smarter than anyone, but helpful.
I agree higher number of appreciation might not be a validation of one's knowledge, however, it only offers us an option to thank. Who thanks you, is still a recognition, as it shows, who read the post and acknowledged the point.
However, we still request our members to comment on the documents they download or add on to the discussion. Adding on to the collective understanding will result with why this was implemented in the first place.
Please brainstorm and share a little more on the ranking that you would find meaningful. If we can add it to the Cite Communities Certification, it would be the best validation of one's knowledge.
Please consider my request. Looking forward to hear more on this and ensure it serves the purpose, better.

Hey,
Appreciation has been the only motivation and achievement an individual receives to enhance or share their knowledge and skills. A member who has knowledge on certain topics or field will only share his / her views. N individual will share their ideas if they do ot possess any knowledge.
In this case which you have pointed out, i just want tot ell you that we have added he appreciation tab so that the knowledge and ideas shared by our fellow members should be valued and recognized.
No member or individual will appreciate any thread or post or neither will validate it for the case of fun. Only those members will always appreciate and validate the threads or posts who will understand and gets to learn from them.
We have come out with the Certificate to appreciate and thank our members for the knowledge and contributions they share with other members and us. We are also in the process of getting suggestions from our fellow members to improve the Certificate so that we can make the Certificate more comprehensive.

Thanks Nabimita Ji & Ankit.
Just wanted to add that "Knowledge Certification" must not be based on appreciations received only (as after 10 appreciation person will get the certificate print) but on valid contributions of the members.
Will sure suggest ideas to make it useful.

Let me put in my two cents about why the certification still works even with the amount of general appreciations and how this can be used by recruiters or otherwise to check on the character quality of the certification they are checking.
This has become common practice in the developed nations that all recruiting is done after a fair bit of online checking. The recruiter check for:
1) the kind of sites where the person may have accounts
2) the messages and tone of the posts made on those sites
3) whether there is any involvement in any illegal acts
While In India hardly anyone thinks about checking online before hiring that Sales Rep or that Finance admin or that HR recruiter, a lot can be found out about a person if only its done properly. While facebook can give you some indications about the person's personality and linkedin can give you basic information about the user's profile (which you may already have) - there aren't many knowledge show-casing sites. Which is where we want to be - a place where your knowledge is showcased in a conversational medium not in some thesis or paper which you prepare and correct for weeks.
Now, on to the question about the number of appreciations received - firstly, we are going to remove the number from the certificate so that the certificate can be printed more appropriately. Secondly, you will notice that the appreciations is a link which leads to all the posts that were appreciated. We are not building this as a numbers game, where if I have more points than you, then I am better. The task of the recruiter or anyone checking the certification is to gauge the depth of the person by reviewing the kind of posts the person made and the ones which got appreciated.
I hope this will help in understanding the concept better.

Sid

Hi
I saw the new certificate
I think removing the number of appreciates is a step backwards.
There is nothing wrong is showing how many appreciations a person has received.
Personally, I am not going to print or use the certificates.
But it is nice to see the mumbers there. It acts as a motivation.
The original post raised an interesting point.
Is there a possibility of putting category to appreciates ?
It would be easy to put on the site, with a set of bullet or check boxes popping up.
But deciding what category should be put needs to be thinking
I think an agree / disagree may be a good idea, specially since I see so many contradictory statements in the same thread. A new user or someone reviewing on a search tends to get confused which is the right one
Also,
Just realised that all my posts are getting shown as bangalore though I am in mumbai
Checked my profile page and the location is shown there as mumbai
Is there some other area where I need to update ?
Will appreciate if someone can tell me how to correct it

Hi Saswata,
The certificate will be of use to new professionals who want to showcase their talent and ability to be vocal in a community. Having the number on certificate requires constant updating if someone has printed it - that was the main reason for it's removal. The number of appreciates also displays on the home page in the right column. The certificate will be improved in due course showing appreciations from seniors separately.
The Agree / Disagree is a good idea - I'll try to incorporate something like that soon - the nomenclature of the "Appreciation" is perhaps limiting, so is the Agree / Disagree actually. Perhaps we can just use Vote Up / Vote Down. It'll probably be more general.
The account location can be changed from the home page [when logged in] - start typing in the city name and suggestions will appear in a drop down - select the one you want. The page will then reload. You can then click on the "Save Current Location" link placed under the "Recent" checkbox to change the location of your account and all the posts.

The thread on Appreciation is very interesting and it is intriguing to note that
both for and against selective Appreciation, have drawn Appreciation from the members.
So there is Appreciation from all quarters one way or other !!!
Going back to the start of the thread, it is to distinguish Appreciation received for Knowledge
from Appreciation received for fun. I glad that Knowledge stands out by itself.
Coming to fun, can we be so curt as to limit fun as something without knowledge
( a humourous post packs in it more matter than what is apparent).
During my last 6 active months, ignoring the previous inactive months from March 2011 to July 2012,
I found people readily appreciate the humourous ones . While my postings on Learning from Shakespeare drew some Appreciation on an even pattern, the single slide featuring Bernard Shaws humour had a staggering 1700 + downloads. We may take a stand that Humour and Fun are different and that according to me would be cutting it too fine.
One more message is around. I may even make an over statement that ready wit, fun and humour appeal better, as they ease your tension momentarily. Does not the author deserve an Appreciation?
Well if still both have to be differentiated, perhaps there can be two buttons
APPRECIATION FOR KNOWLEDGE.
APPRECIATION FOR FUN.
Coming to the numbers display. At the end of the day the numbers do count.
It is a comparative index. As long as a posting wins an Appreciation, it becomes an
Instant recognition. Retaining it on the certificate is an added advantage.
Otherwise a person has to take another screen shot from some other frame.
So how do we judge the postings?
Conventional wisdom says Consider Quantity and Quality together.
In the certificate with the Appreciation being taken away only Quantity remains.
Is it not incomplete ?
V.Raghunathan . Navi Mumbai
P.S. Incidentally the total Appreciation received by me has touched 400 today,
out of 804 postings. I thank all the Cite HR members who made this possible.
