Hi,
I work as an Asst. Manager - HR in insurance company.
Recently I have received an letter from one of the employee's wife. He recently got married on 16th Jan 2011.
His wife had courier a letter about his husband (who is employed with us) about his bad behavior .
She mentioned in letter that his husband and other family members started hitting and abusing him from 3rd day of there marriage for dowry and he also have some mental issues and drug addicted. She also had filled 498 Dowry case against him
Many other things about his husband was mentioned in the letter, which can force anyone to think about the human behavior
I believe such employee is not good fit in organization.
Please advise should our management take any action against him?
Thanks & Regards,
Ashu

Dear Ashu
First of all you tell me reply for these questions.
Is it happened in working hours or in work premises.
Is there any complaint about him in company or from Customer
What is his calibre. Have you ever noticed his inability to perform or under-performance in work.
How is his discipline (Coming to Office Going from Office, inter personal skills, working style and work culture, etc.)
What your company's rule says, about Police enquiry, about arrest of employees, about joining or involving in Political organisations, Communal activities etc.
As a HR man you should not have any love or hatred towards any act or any person. You must have empathy not simpathy
Handle with care while dealing with such cases
Do not lose the humanity

Dear Ashu,
Perfect Reply from Bhaskar.
To add on :
As an HR representing the company, you should be watchful and only bothered about what the employee does in the company. If his actions / deeds have resulted in the breach of "Terms & Conditions" of employment, you can take necessary disciplinary action.
In this case, on what grounds will you terminate this employee ??
On a personal note, what if this is a trick played by his wife to debacle her husband's job and she is mentally unsound ??

Hi Bhaskar,

This happened when he was on his leaves (for wedding). As an employee we don't have any complaint with him. but he is bit introvert, he never participated in other activities of the company like birthday celebrations, picnic's outings or any other function. He also sounds dominating to his peers sometimes.

He come on time and leave on time from office and I also had a discussion with his Direct Manager and Head of the department. They said "we never had problem with his work, even he tried for other options in market but we retained him".

They left on HR Department to take the further action as per HR policies and take the decision.

But we don't have any HR Policy on such disruptive behavior of employee in personal life.

Hi Sriram,

I agree with you and i know it will be not right decision to terminate the employee. But what if the employee is really not mentally fit. I am not sure on his wife as she is also working as HR in realty company and to create an awareness on his disruptive behavior she had written us this letter.

Thanks and Regards,

Ashu

Can you check his wife's character, before marriage any problem, by complaining about him she can break the marriage and she can settle with someone else.
Always you must think in differrent angle too.
Take appropriate action as per your company's rules & regulation. Never do anything in hasty.
We cannot think of his outside activities as it is nowhere affecting our company. In case any police side complaints regarding other involment of criminal activities then the question of termination comes. Please try to help him out to come out from this problem. He will be an asset to your organisation.
All the best
